A Near Perfect Controller with NO DRIFT! EVER!
5 Stars
A Near Perfect Controller with NO DRIFT! EVER!
I've been using this controller for almost two (2) weeks now and I love it! I purchased it solely to be my main controller for PC and it has been flawless so far. I haven't tested it on many games, but I've been playing some FPS games and it's been perfect.I've been using the dock plugged into my PC with the 2.4ghz dongle left inside the base of the dock (USB pass-through) and the controller has been connecting perfectly fine with no discernable lag or any disconnections. I'll summarize everything in lists below:~~~~~SIDE NOTES:~~~~~-Windows 10 recognizes the controller (via USB wired or the 2.4ghz dongle) as an "Xbox 360 Controller" in the Device Manager (and GamePad Tester), but recognizes the controller as "Ultimate Wireless Controller" in the Bluetooth and Other Devices Settings... weird!-Steam (PC) recognizes the controller as an "Xbox One Controller" via USB wired or the 2.4ghz dongle.-Nintendo Switch recognizes it as a "Switch Pro Controller" via Bluetooth.-It came with firmware version 1.01 installed on it, which I am currently still running with no issues for my purposes so far.-Note that this is the "Ultimate Bluetooth Controller," which is DIFFERENT than the "Ultimate Controller" and "Ultimate Wired Controller." The latter two don't have the Hall Effect joystick module sensors.-Included in box = controller, pair of joystick covers, dock with 2.4ghz dongle, multi-language manual, and a 1m long USB-A to USC-C cable.~~~~~PROS:~~~~~---Features:----HALL EFFECT JOYSTICK MODULES! The main reason why I got this controller. These do not use the conventional potentiometer joysticks that you find in every other controller on the planet which will eventually wear out components and develop joystick drift. These use GuliKit's Hall Effect joysticks (magnets) and is theoretically immune to joystick drift. The springs in the joystick modules will wear out first before the sensors get drift, which is amazing. No planned obsolescence here!-BACK BUTTONS! Second main reason why I got this controller.-Very long 1000mAh Lithium-ion 22hr battery life! With the use of the dock, however, you wouldn't really need to worry about this often.-ZERO deadzone out of the box from the factory. See the joystick axis values in the Gamepad Tester image... all 0's!-Free pair of rubber 8BitDo joystick covers included in the box.---Interface:----Joysticks are smooth and feel great. Clicky and responsive.-Face buttons feel great (rubber membrane type).-D-pad feels great (rubber membrane type).-Back paddle buttons feel amazing (clicky tactile type).-Analog triggers are buttery smooth.-Shoulder buttons feel great (possible rubber membrane type).-2.4ghz/Bluetooth switch on the rear of the controller.-Turbo button if you're into that (I don't use it).-If you're playing on a Switch or something that allows multiple controllers, there are square player # LED indicator lights on the front side of the controller (underneath the profile # LEDs).---Ergonomics:----Very comfortable! But isn't as good/ergonomic as my old Xbox One controller (subjective).-Nearly the same size as my old Microsoft Xbox One controller (see pictures).---Connectivity:----2.4ghz connectivity (with the dongle; dongle can be in the base of the dock and the dock plugged into your PC if you want, or you can take the dongle out; both work!). No discernable lag with this vs a USB wired connection!-USB-C hard wire connectivity.-Bluetooth connectivity.-Works great on PC and Nintendo Switch (and apparently also Steam Deck; see Neutral section).-Connects to and works on my Android phones (tested on Samsung S7E and S21) for games. Even allows me to navigate apps on my phone's home screen.-Shake the controller to wake up a sleeping Nintendo Switch.---Construction:----Solid construction and feels high quality in hand. No creaking or cracking when holding and squeezing the controller/trying to twist and bend it.-A bit lighter than an Xbox One controller.-Shell is made from hard plastic with no rubberized/soft touch materials (which I like) and the grips have this texture on it made from little hard dots which is surprisingly grippy!---Dock:----High quality dock also features a spot to store the 2.4ghz USB dongle; what's better, is that this acts as a USB-passthrough so you don't actually have to take the dongle out! Just plug the dock into your PC and it'll activate/utilize the dongle as well as act as a dock to charge your controller.-There are little magnets inside that help align the controller, so that's helpful.-There's a soft white LED light bar at the bottom of the dock that indicates the controller is charging, which is a nice touch in my opinion.-There's a rubber ring/pad underneath the dock to keep it from sliding around on a desk.---Software:----Fantastic software for remapping buttons, setting profiles, setting deadzones/other sensitivities, and creating macros. Works flawlessly for syncing settings to the controller on the Windows 10 software.-Settings are stored locally on the controller, so you don't need to have any software running in the background!-Software available on Windows 10, Android, and iOS (iPhones).-Controller supports 3 custom profiles, with technically a 4th profile being no profiles on (profile 0, 1, 2, and 3). This is indicated with the three circular LED dots in between the D-pad and right joystick. The profile switcher button is directly above these LEDs, underneath the middle 'star' button.---Price:----MSRP is $70 USD but I got this controller at Amazon Canada for $76.99 CAD (maybe a price error in my favour? Since this converts to $57 USD) around two weeks ago from the official 8BitDo Canada seller/vendor, shipped by Amazon via Prime.-For this price, you're not going to get anything better out there for this quality and amount of features (I'm mostly comparing it to the first-party controllers).~~~~~NEUTRAL:~~~~~-Joystick tension is slightly greater/heavier than that of my old Xbox One controller joysticks. Not bad, but I would prefer it to be a bit lighter.-I haven't tested it myself but apparently when using it on a Steam Deck, there's a bug where once you've connected it, the controller won't actually control anything (connected but no input registration). You need to fully turn off the controller by holding the main home button, then turn it back on for inputs to be registered. This is something I've seen on YouTube reviews.-Vibration motors on each side of the controller are different sizes (internally) resulting in a strange vibration feedback. Not a bad thing for me, though. At least you can control the strength of the individual motors in the software!-I haven't tested the gyroscope, so I can't comment on that.~~~~~CONS:~~~~~-Not a fan of the BAYX face button layout (Switch layout) as I'm using it mainly for PC, so I would prefer an ABXY layout and 8BitDo does not offer this for this controller, nor do they currently offer replacement buttons... maybe one day? EDIT: 8BitDo now offers replacement Xbox style (ABXY) buttons on their official shop website!-Judging by online reviews, there seems to be connectivity issues with the controller and some devices out there. I haven't had any issues with this.-Gamepad Tester circularity test error rate is a bit higher than I would've expected considering it has absolutely 0 deadzone from the factory. I guess having no deadzone doesn't mean anything for circularity error. I haven't noticed this affecting precision in FPS games, though.-No NFC (I don't need it).-Battery is non-replaceable.-No controller travel case included.-Unable to use gyro functions in 2.4ghz mode - must be in Bluetooth mode for this.Overall, I haven't had issues like many other reviews out there. It's actually been near perfect for me. Who knows, maybe they got lemons and I didn't. Either way, I'm extremely happy with this controller and should last me a very long time considering it won't ever get stick drift. I would highly recommend this controller over all first party controllers out there. What makes it even better is that I got it for less than the MSRP!

This controller is fantastic top to bottom. It blows away any 3rd party and even first party Nintendo Switch or PC controllers. It feels really comfortable, has hall effect sticks(no drift), has remappable back buttons, haptics, gyro, everything you need and it can wake the Switch from sleep mode just by shaking the controller. The included dock is very stylish, and makes charging a joy because you always know where the controller is and that it's topped up. There is a wireless dongle included to connect to PC without a usb cable as well. This thing is the complete package and is cheaper than official hardware. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

I can't say how much I love this controller. I had pretty small hands and this is perfect. The ergonomics are good, and playing for hours doesn't give me any strains.

Battery life is good, it meets their rating of around 20 hours play time. When the batteries run out, you can just plug it in via the USB-C and use it as a wired controller. I find myself just plopping it onto the dock every 3 days and everything is good to go. I do wish there was a battery indicator somewhere though, as the controller starts being wacky when it's low on battery.

The Hall Effect sticks are a DREAM compared to the standard X-box 360 controller. So smooth, and the controls are much finer.

The ability to program and customize buttons is also awesome. I like how you can have multiple profiles as well, and just load the one you preset for a game. It's all stored locally on the controller.

Just love this controller. Great job 8-bit on this fantastic product!

Overall, worth it. I was looking for an xbox one style of controller that had a better d-pad and came across this brand. I've been using it for a few months and am very pleased with my purchase. I use it with my Nintendo Switch and PC.

The Good:
D-pad perfection, solid construction, and gyro with the switch (Tears of the Kingdom is great with this controller). The slightly grippier texture on the back is great and all of the buttons feel responsive. I'm also quite happy that they come with hall-effect joysticks, I've adjusted the dead zones on PC and enjoy the tighter feeling. The profiles are fun to play around with; I have rarely adjusted anything from stock, though. The controller wakes my switch with the big button and a shake, very convenient. The d-pad feels exactly like my SNES controller d-pad. Changing from console to PC is easy with the toggle switch on the back.

I really like the rumble/vibration in this controller - it's not as loud as my xbox one controller, but feels tighter. I don't know how to describe it other than 'it feels right'.

The bad:
The shape is slightly more vertical than my xbox one controller. It makes the controller less comfortable than if the palm areas were more outward pointing. It's something that is quite minor but annoying from time to time. I was also disappointed with the sealed battery - I would have preferred to use my rechargeable AA batteries with this controller. I thought this was odd because 8bitdo's other pro controller, the Pro 2, has slots for batteries (but PlayStation styled symmetrical joysticks).

Conclusion
It's a fantastic controller; the build quality, features, and hall effect joysticks come together for a nearly-perfect experience. It's especially good if you're a Switch owner who also plays on PC. I went back and forth for a long time before deciding on this controller and I'm glad that I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente opción para nintendo switch

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Alternative to the Nintendo Pro Controller
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2023

This controller functions exactly as you would expect an official Nintendo controller to work.
The stick response and motion controls feel almost identical. I would recommend this controller to anyone who uses the Switch pro controller or anyone with a gaming PC.

Pros:
+Hall-effect sticks that won't drift like most controllers
+Easy customization of buttons using the phone app
+Back paddle buttons are a nice option to have
+Generous battery life and convenient charging cradle
+Sturdy construction. It feels very well-built.
+The layout of the +, -, screenshot, and home buttons make it much less likely for me to accidentally take screenshots

Cons:
-No NFC scanner, so no amiibo functionality
-R and L buttons are a little stiff
-Dpad a little wonky with inputs, just like the official controllers
-Slightly smaller in the hands than the official pro controller (a con for me, but not for everyone)

I would love to see an NFC reader included in the next iteration of this controller. I would also like some additional color options for the shell (translucent colors would be awesome).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Controller

I bought this for three reasons: one, the hall effect joysticks due to having 3 pairs of joysticks and an official pro controller become unusable due to drift; two, the two back buttons which are really handy, and three, the motion controls. It absolutely delivers on all these fronts. The sticks are insanely accurate and smooth, the back buttons are super comfortable, and the motion controls are simply incredible. On three fronts this thing destroys the official Switch Pro.
A few extra nice features are that the dock and controller feel very well built; the docks is super easy to use and looks pretty sweet with its light up feature; you can store the 2.4 GH adaptor in the bottom of the dock; you get three separate profiles each with customizable button mapping, stick dead-zones, trigger dead-zones, macros, etcetera; the software is really easy to use; and the unboxing experience is great.
There are a few cons though, number one being comfort. It feels decent, and it's definitely not uncomfortable, but at the same time it's not as conforming as the Switch Pro (which is heaven in the hand) or an Xbox controller. You also cannot use the back buttons, macros, or any other customization without downloading software to your computer and wiring your controller to it.
My final verdict is that it is pretty sweet controller. If you are looking to never deal with joy-con drift again and get some nice bonus features (back buttons and macros) and upgraded essentials (sticks and motion controls) I think the tradeoffs (slightly less comfort) are absolutely worth it. Only people who I would not recommend this to are people who are really looking for comfort due to hours long gaming sessions, although to be fair I have not experimented with this quite yet so I'm not sure if it would really be that bad.

(Update: so actually, I tested the sticks a bit compared to my one non-drifting pro-controller stick and I don't think it's more accurate; it might actually be less accurate. I'm not sure if this is due to the tension being tighter and me not being used to it or the stick itself, but just something to keep in mind. It's still pretty darn good though, way better than a joy con and definitely better than dealing with drift. Plus, it's the Switch so having the most accurate sticks in the world aren't going to do much good on say competitive FPSs that run at 30 fps and 780p. Gyro controls I still think are better than the official pro controller though.)
