We’re thrilled to announce that our Black and White Building has won an RIBA National Award! London’s tallest fully engineered timber structure, The Black and White Building sets a powerful new precedent for sustainable and carbon conscious design. Winner of this year’s RIBA Client of the Year Award, the east London office building is defined by its integrity to material and honesty of form, a simplicity which belies its ground-breaking ambition and innovation, utilising the powerful carbon capture and biophilic qualities of wood. 🌲 #RIBANationalAwards #RIBA2024 #RIBA #WaughThistletonArchitects #ConstructionRevolution Photo credit: Jake Curtis

Mass timber is revolutionizing construction. In comparison to traditional concrete and steel, it offers a low-carbon alternative while bringing a natural aesthetic to buildings. Tune in and subscribe to the Shaping Sustainable Places podcast to hear experts Andrew Waugh from Waugh Thistleton Architects and Dean Lewis from Skanska USA discuss what’s so good about wood. https://lnkd.in/gSBssikE #ShapingSustainablePlaces #KnowledgeAndForesight #masstimber #podcast

Great to see the NLA sharing our post-occupancy LCA study of the recently completed Black & White building. We use LCAs at every stage of project development to iterate the design, drive material sufficiency, and inform design decisions. In the case of Black & White, the figure of 343 kgCO2e/m2 represents a betterment over the design stage calculated figure of 410 kgCO2e/m2, illustrating how carbon can be reduced as details for the project are developed. #LCA #sustainability #workplace #office #architecture
Waugh Thistleton Architects recently published a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of our award-winning Black & White Building. An LCA is an analysis of the environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a building's life, from the raw materials and energy used in the production, construction, and operation of a building to its eventual end-of-life disposal. An LCA enables architects to identify and improve on particularly carbon-intensive areas, which, when used during the building process, can help inform more environmentally and carbon-conscious design choices with reliable data. We believe this LCA sets an important precedent for architects and the construction industry at large to take stock of the environmental impacts of their buildings, which we see as fundamental to the UK’s transition into a green construction industry.
