Friday morning started very early for me, in the beautiful and historic district of Leadenhall market, just steps away from where I started my career as young economist at the Bank of England 25 years ago. Speaking to journalists about the general election result, what it means for business, and the policies that our members would like to see from the new government, it certainly felt historic. Not least because for the first time in history, we have a female Chancellor of the Exchequer in Rachel Reeves - an avid and brilliant economist who I was lucky to work with during my time at the Bank of England. As she so eloquently put it in her speech to HMT staff, 'to every young woman and girl watching this: let today show that there should be no ceilings on your ambitions, your hopes or your dreams.' And we will all need that ambition and steely determination as we turn our hand to ensuring we deliver the sustainable growth our economy needs. While we've seen some encouraging signs that the economy is picking up steam, we need to shift up a gear for business investment to deliver the green growth, innovation and digital economy that leads to higher living standards across the UK. We need to build on what has gone before. And as all leaders soon find out – you can’t fix every challenge alone. The government needs to partner with business to harness the ideas, innovation and optimism to deliver lasting change. Over the past few months, I've been inspired and led forward by the brilliant ideas and energy of business leaders around the UK. Now with the election over, the real work and hard graft begins: delivery, delivery, delivery. We stand ready to play our part. But for now, for all of us, it's home for some more sleep. And a chance for me to share the excitement and optimism with my daughters. Rest up everyone, we have work to do. CBI CEO Rain Newton-Smith was on BBC Radio 4 this morning: “it’s been brilliant to see The Labour Party talking about being the party of business…the vast majority of investment has to come from the private sector so they need to be working with the CBI, working with our members to really help to deliver that growth”
