An incredible evening at the Cambridge Science Centre's launch party, where they unveiled their new home at the Trinity Centre on the Cambridge Science Park 🧪 The place looked amazing thanks to COEL, who reconfigured the original conference space and the barber shop. Trinity College Cambridge's partnership with the Science Centre made this move possible, creating a state-of-the-art facility 🤩 Cambridge Science Centre officially opens on July 23. About us
Since it was established by Trinity College in 1970, the Cambridge Science Park has played a pivotal role in the “Cambridge Phenomenon” - the transformation of Cambridge from a market town with a world-class university to one of the hottest technology hotspots in the world. Today the 152-acre site is home to 100 science and technology companies ranging from spin-outs from the University of Cambridge to multinational companies seeking access to the brightest graduates and entrepreneurs from Cambridge’s diverse talent pool. Many are working on potentially life changing technologies from personalised medicines and non-invasive cancer diagnostics to artificial intelligence, IoT, radar and connectivity, to name just a few. The Park is now in its next phase of development with the opening in July 2017 of the Bradfield Centre - a 40,000 sq ft building, purpose-built to accommodate hundreds of researchers, inventors, start-ups and scale-up companies - followed by the opening of a stunning new facility for leading games company Frontier Plc in the spring of 2018. Further developments scheduled to come forward in the next 5 years include 360,000 sq ft of office buildings and a 40,000 sq ft BioHub as well as significant upgrades to the public realm, landscaping and transport infrastructure.

My brain is still buzzing after a couple of super-stimulating days focussed on entrepreneurial ecosystems and their vital ingredients. 🌱 The Cambridge Forum for Space gathered at The Bradfield Centre, Cambridge Science Park’s thriving tech startups hub. Members (the operators of innovation spaces across Cambridge) joined our community for the first ever Park Picnic. The weather was glorious! 🏢 UKSPA - The United Kingdom Science Park Association convened in Birmingham’s fabulous new STEAMhouse that, phoenix-like, has risen from the ashes of dereliction as a centre for collaborative innovation. Sessions ranged from creating supportive ecosystems for acceleration, to the role of architecture in creating communities of innovators. 🍻 … and finally, back to The Cambridge Union, steeped in history, to debate the motion that “Startups eat scaleups for breakfast”! Team Scaleup, led by Lord Karan Bilimoria, trounced Piers Linney’s Team Startup. Without startups there would be no scale ups, but it is scaling that creates the greatest opportunity and impact through the creation of jobs and economic growth. 🐉 But it was a comment made by TV’s star dragon Piers that has stuck with me: “Forget incubators, VCs... A waste of time. The social capital in this room is the most valuable help imaginable.” 🤔 Cambridge’s geographical compactness is widely acknowledged as one of the key contributing factors to the “Cambridge Phenomenon”. Could Piers be right?

Cambridge Science Park still manages to surprise me, even after nearly two years here! I wish I could capture the hum of bees and the half dozen cheeky bug species that landed on me while taking this photo by the upper lake… 🐝 🐞 🪲 #buglife #biodiversity #environment #nature #wildlife #faunaandflora #workplaceenvironment
