Residents turn to trusted sources in emergencies, don't assume you're a trusted source because of your title, role or agency. The motivation behind crisis communications is to provide accurate information and timely advice to the served population. We know that trust is earned, through establishing relationships and demonstrating value. We also acknowledge that trust in government institutions is in a state of plurality and trending downwards. The challenge will be to differentiate the role of crisis communicators from the general malaise that is government, an independent trusted voice in times of crisis. Humans will make informed decisions then act, we cannot assume that residents will use public sector information to make those decisions. Establishing trust requires aggressive patience, a longitudinal roadmap, an investment of time.
