Android apps like Instagram could soon take Ultra HDR pictures.

Google has been testing adding Ultra HDR image capture to a limited camera API for Android 14 that’s aimed at the basic camera needs of social media apps, according to Android Authority.

Once the changes are available to developers, you’d no longer need to capture Ultra HDR images in a separate app to upload to Instagram.

FCC docs show Pixel 9 phones with built-in Thread radios.

That’s according to 9to5Google. As it happens, Android 15 may support directly controlling smart home devices with your phone via Thread, a key component of the Matter smart home protocol.

Pixel 9 phones wouldn’t be alone — Apple put Thread radios in the iPhone 15 Pro phones, too.

First, Apple put Thread in the iPhone, now the smart home radio could be coming to Android phones.

Mishaal Rahman reports that Android 15 adds a Thread Network Stack to allow Android smartphones with Thread radios to directly control Thread smart home devices.

But there aren’t any such phones yet. Only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have Thread. With the Pixel 9 launching next month, that could soon change.

Google Maps’ Immersive View has arrived in Canada.

The country may have felt forgotten when the feature expanded to New York, London, and Tokyo last year, but starting today Canadians can take a virtual tour of their own cities including Montreal, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Edmonton. Check out the CN Tower, or pan your way through the historic streets of Old Montreal.

Google Photos is working on a “weekly photo journal” you can share with friends.

A teardown from Android Authority showed a new My Week feature that could let you share weekly photos with friends and family members. Those who receive the weekly memory may then be able to view a slideshow of the shared photos and leave a comment.

Google is making it easier for doctors to track heart data through Fitbit.

Instead of a patient having to export and share Afib data with their healthcare provider, doctors can now access this information from within the Fitbit Web API. According to Google, this could allow hospitals to incorporate patient data into heart health programs, while researchers can use it to inform studies.

Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm are, uh, still doing that XR thing.

Google’s Rick Osterloh mentioned the elusive XR collaboration briefly in his onstage appearance at Unpacked, without providing any new details. That’s the at least the third time we’ve heard about it without actually hearing anything at all about it. But I guess now we know it’s still a thing in the Osterloh Android era?

Google Gemini x Samsung.

Google and Samsung confirmed that their deal for Gemini AI features on Galaxy devices will bring updates (announced at I/O earlier this year) that let it read and respond to what’s on your phone screen or in a video you’re watching, as well as new Circle to Search features.

With Number Lock, you can’t transfer your phone number to a new phone or port your number over to another carrier, Google says.
