A Walrus named Freya euthanized after troubling crowds in Oslo fjord

On Sunday, A Walrus named Freya that attracts crowds while basking in the sun in the Oslo fjord has been euthanized, The Guardian reports.

The Head of Norway’s fisheries directorate, Frank Bakke-Jensen said in a statement that the decision to euthanize had been taken based on a global evaluation of the persistent threat to human security.

He further says that they carefully examined all the possible solutions. They concluded that they cannot assure the well-being of the animal by any of the available means.

Previously, the officials said that they were considering euthanasia because repeated appeals to the public for keeping their distance from the young female weighing 600 kg had been in vain.

Since 17 July, the walrus has been in the news when she was first spotted in the waters of the Norwegian capital.

Curious spectators continued to approach her, sometimes with the children in tow, to take pictures, in spite of the repeated appeals.

Freya had already been seen in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden and chose to spend part of the summer in Norway.

In Norway, Freya first gains notoriety by climbing on pleasure boats in Kragerø.
