Introduction

The Galaxy M51 had eluded the market for quite some time before it was unveiled, as the first worthwhile rumors about the device emerged in early 2020. Much to our expectations, the Galaxy M51 strikes a great balance between price and performance.

Just like the Galaxy A51, the Galaxy M51 is a good value proposition. It even threatened the Galaxy A71 through a combination of great specs and aggressive pricing. It was also the first Samsung smartphone to break the 6,000mAh barrier for the battery.

Design

The Galaxy M51 adopts what could be described as Samsung's standard design for the mid-range 2020 smartphone portfolio. It has a metal frame, a glossy back panel, a rectangular camera cutout with an L-shaped camera array, as well as an Infinity-O display with a centered cutout and relatively thin bezels all around.

The phone's physical buttons reside on the right edge of the phone where the side-mounted fingerprint scanner is also found. The phone measures 163.9 x 76.3 x 9.5mm and weighs around 213 grams.

Specifications

SamMobile exclusively learned that Samsung is developing the Galaxy M51 with 128GB of built-in storage, and indeed, the phone features 128GB of memory as well as 6GB or 8GB of RAM.

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 730G chipset featuring four Kryo 470 Gold cores and four Kryo 470 Silver cores, as well as an Adreno 618 graphics chip. The device is powered by a whopping 7,000mAh battery – the largest it's ever been inside a Galaxy smartphone – and the unit even takes advantage of 25W fast charging.

Other features include Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, a standard 3.5mm audio port, and a microSD card slot for expandable storage.

Display

Samsung had adopted the Infinity-O display design for the Galaxy M51. The Super AMOLED Plus panel has a 6.7-inch diagonal and a resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels, leading to a pixel density of almost 400 pixels per inch (ppi).

Like the majority of Galaxy smartphones at this point in time, the Galaxy M51 has a 60Hz display.

Camera

The Galaxy M51's back panel accommodates a quad-camera combo comprising a 64MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and 123-degrees field of vision, and two 5MP macro and depth cameras, each with an f/2.4 aperture.

Selfie enthusiasts have a 32MP camera at their disposal, boasting HDR capabilities, an f/2.0 aperture, and 1080p@30fps video recording capabilities.

Software and Features

Samsung released the Galaxy M51 with Android 10 and One UI 2.1 Core out of the box. If the combination of hardware and price is the best thing the Galaxy M51 has to offer then the software experience is probably the aspect that is lacking the most.

The Core version of One UI is missing a few features such as Samsung Pay and Secure Folder. However, the firmware was updated to One UI 2.5 and the user experience has improved as a result.

Price and Availability

The Galaxy M51 was released in Europe, specifically Germany, on pre-order terms in late-August 2020 when it debuted for 360 EUR. The phone was released in Russia through offline retail channels a week later for the equivalent of $393, and a couple of days after that, it arrived in India for the starting price of INR 24,999 ($339).
