  • Google has started rolling out Gemini AI in the Messages app.
  • The rollout comes shortly after Meta AI’s integration in WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and other apps.

Google’s Gemini AI is now available in the default Messages app on Android. Users can now directly ask the chatbot questions from the SMS app. The integration will allow users to draft messages, have fun conversations, plan events, etc., within the Messages app.

Google Messages Now Includes Gemini AI

Gemini’s availability in the Messages app makes it easier for users to access the AI chatbot. Previously, it was only present as a standalone app or website. Some devices also allowed Gemini to replace the default Google Assistant.

With the latest update, Android users can now experience the power of AI through the default messages app by selecting New Chat > Gemini. The chatbot is available for free to all users.

Gemini can answer your queries, write an essay, suggest message ideas, plan your schedule, read your emails, and perform other similar tasks.

However, users will need an active internet connection to use the Gemini AI on their phone. The chatbot does not work with regular SMS and needs active internet over mobile data or WiFi.

The functionality is currently under a phased rollout and may take some time to arrive for all users. It is recommended that you update your Google Messages app to the latest version, but this does not assure you instant access to the chatbot. As this is an official rollout, we can expect it to be available for all users over the next 2-3 weeks.

Google’s integration of Gemini AI came shortly after Meta AI arrived on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Both AI chatbots are now more easily available within social apps that users use daily. Both moves are expected to drive more users towards AI, especially for audiences that might not be very familiar with the artificial intelligence space.

Both Google and Meta have designed their chatbots to be beginner-friendly. They can be opened as a regular chat in their respective apps, providing a familiar conversational experience for new users.
