Put users first. Always.
When work feels like play - an interactive user testing session @Happyr Health

Put users first. Always.

Put users first. Always.

If you have a few spare days, I’ll be happy to share all my learnings since founding Happyr Health. As I assume that you only have a minute or so, here is my most important one:

Put users first. Always.

No mentor, investor, friend, colleague, and definitely not you, can give you the honest feedback and criticism you need to develop a valuable product. You will have to ask your users at any product stage. It’s tough. It’ll always be tough. Nobody wants to be criticized all the time for things they build. Things, as a product person, you’ll most likely be proud of.

It’ll hurt. It’ll heal. No scars left. Just learnings.

I had the pleasure to share these insights with an inspiring group of women at KTN’s webinar “Let’s talk about… What I wish I’d known”. (Watch the webinar if you haven’t seen it yet.)

We all agreed that we are too harsh on ourselves. And adding critical user feedback on top is not always within our comfort zone. Yet, what you should do when starting a business is put your laptop away, grab a piece of paper, and get out there to talk to your users. Considering our current times, online is better than not at all. So, don’t take me literally on that. And you will get positive and heartwarming feedback as well, so don't be afraid.

Finally, some great learnings I got from the amazing speakers and hosts today:

  • @Sallee Poinsette-Nash (Brandable & Co): A 7 out of 10 is good enough. Maybe not scientifically, but in real life going from 7 to 10 is often too much effort with not enough impact on the end result.
  • @Deborah Coughlin (Method X Studios): Get people on board that take on tasks you are not so good at. Free up time to be an 11 out of 10 in areas you really enjoy and excel in.
  • @Siwan Smith (KTN): Deeply understand your own strengths and weaknesses. Whatever you choose to do, work towards boosting your strengths.
  • @Kate Cameron (Cytochroma UK): Do something you don’t want to do in the morning to get it out of the way.

And pssst, if you only take away one piece of advice: Put users first.
