Managing Editor for Business and Economy at NBC News; experienced newsroom leader

To the people laid off today at The Wall Street Journal: I’ve been there, and I know how terrible it feels. No amount of happy talk or encouragement at this moment will match your disappointment and pain. You busted your back to deliver some of the best, most trusted journalism in the world, and you made an impact. You deserve better. For now, though, claim your time. Take a long walk. Find solace in your loved ones. Book a trip if you can afford it. Treat yourself to some comfort food. Sleep. Whatever helps. Leave the work for another day. My inbox is open. Hit me up if you want to vent or just talk.

I'm dating myself here, but I remember when it was a point of pride among news organizations that they did not lay off (especially) newsroom staff. I wish we could return to a time when all of the risk was not on the employee side. Please reach out if I can help. I'm happy to talk/meet for coffee.

I'm sorry to hear about this happening. Good luck to everyone. I know how being laid off feels. You almost certainly don't know me, but you can reach out to me if you want.

Good stuff, Mike. This is the kind of meaningful solace that hardworking folks need at a time like this.
