All articles in Atmosphere MDPI (2073-4433) Vol 15, Issue 5, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wKI1i COVER STORY: The problem of snow accumulation and ice formation on airplane wings, wind turbine blades, transmission cables or buildings has been studied over several decades. With the growing interest in autonomous vehicles (AVs), this concern extends to advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The full autonomy of AVs is not ensured during episodes of intense weather precipitation, as stressors like snow and icing negatively influence sensor functionality. For this reason, research from Ontario Tech University presents work discussing existing icing and snow accretion models, along with their adaptations for automotive applications. A model architecture is proposed in order to progress toward adequate snow accretion predictions for AV operating conditions, and preliminary results are presented. A paper published in the open-access journal Nanomaterials MDPI explores the ability of micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in mice. The article, cited in Forbes, highlights the growing concern of human’s excessive plastic use, and the potential harm it may cause. The research explores the mechanism by which plastic MNPs cross the blood-brain barrier. They find that when the MNPs meet the bilayer, they form a protein structure called the corona. This structure, they found, was also key in determining the toxicity of the plastic particles. Read more about this research: https://brnw.ch/21wLb0r or view the news story: https://brnw.ch/21wLaVg

All articles in MDPI_Toxins (ISSN: 2072-6651) Vol 16, Issue 5, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wKK6B COVER STORY: To assess the potential health risks of mycotoxins in breakfast cereals for children, research from the Universidade do Porto examined the bioaccessibility and intestinal absorption of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), enniatin B (ENNB), and sterigmatocystin (STG) in cereals. The study employed an in vitro gastrointestinal model to investigate how these mycotoxins are released from the cereal during digestion and subsequently absorbed by the intestines. The results revealed that bioaccessibility increased from the stomach to the intestines for AFB1 and STG, but not for ENNB. Bioaccessibility varied across the mycotoxins, ranging from 3.1 to 86.2% for AFB1, 1.5 to 59.3% for STG, and 0.6 to 98.2% for ENNB. Interestingly, milk significantly affected bioaccessibility, and the study found that ENNB and STG exhibited the highest absorption rates when ingested together.
