Today the IPCC released a new report devoted to mitigation. The message from the world's leading scientists is clear: the pathway to 1.5°C by 2030 requires us to dramatically cut fossil fuel use, cut energy waste, cut meat consumption, and develop clean transport.
The UN's Interpanel on Climate Change released a report today outlining the solutions we need to implement in order to limit warming to 1.5°C and head for zero global carbon emissions. Here are the guidelines: 1. By 2030, emissions can be halved leading with solar, wind, efficiency, forest protection, and carbon-rich soils. 2. by 2050, demand-side strategies could cut emissions by 40-70% 3. Money and resources exist, but need to be redirected away from problems to solutions 4. There is no room for new fossil fuel investments and existing plants need to be retired early 5. Equity and justice are important considerations for effective climate policy At LY Advisory, we'd like to hear from you: what projects and programs are your organizations putting into place in order to be part of the solution? “Startling heatwaves at both of Earth’s poles are causing alarm among climate scientists, who have warned the “unprecedented” events could signal faster and abrupt climate breakdown. Temperatures in Antarctica reached record levels at the weekend, an astonishing 40C above normal in places. At the same time, weather stations near the north pole also showed signs of melting, with some temperatures 30C above normal, hitting levels normally attained far later in the year. At this time of year, the Antarctic should be rapidly cooling after its summer, and the Arctic only slowly emerging from its winter, as days lengthen. For both poles to show such heating at once is unprecedented.” https://lnkd.in/gEYJDqyQ #climatechange #globalwarming #scienceandenvironment

"The cumulative scientific evidence is unequivocal: Climate change is a threat to human well-being and planetary health. Any further delay in concerned anticipatory global action on adaptation and mitigation will miss a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all." Today the IPCC released the 1st part of The Working Group II contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report, assessing the impacts of climate change, looking at ecosystems, biodiversity, and human communities at global and regional levels. It also reviews vulnerabilities and the capacities and limits of the natural world and human societies to adapt to climate change. Find the link to the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dKUtKgus

“Two major climate science reports are coming soon from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations body that convenes hundreds of scientists from around the world to assess climate change science. The first report, on climate impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability, is expected in late February; the second, on climate mitigation and solutions, will be published in early April.” “In this report, we expect to see continuing trends in biodiversity loss and natural resource overconsumption. We also anticipate information around the growth of cities and the inequalities that are associated with increased population of urban areas. The report will likely shed light on the more frequent occurrence of damages from extreme weather events, and it is expected to highlight the role of justice and equity, as well as diverse forms of knowledge such as Indigenous knowledge.” “For the first time, the mitigation report will include a chapter on the social aspects of mitigation, drawing from behavioral sciences and exploring topics such as consumer behavior and cultural norms.” #ipcc #climatechange #biodiversity https://lnkd.in/dGNWMPhG
