This is a fantastic report from MassBio summarizing #Biopharma funding in Massachusetts last year. Highlights from the report include: 1. The Biopharma industry has started to adjust to post-pandemic challenges such as higher interest rates with positive trends being observed 2. Massachusetts biopharma secured $7.67 billion VC funding in 2023, close to pre-pandemic levels seen in 2020 3. There was a slight decline in funding rounds and number of companies funded 4. 58% of VC funding goes to companies outside Cambridge, a 7% rise year-on-year with Burlington making its mark with 7% 5. IPO exits were scarce in 2023 (just 2 seen in MA), but M&A activity increased with 38 local companies acquired for a total just over $13B 6. Massachusetts leads in drug development with nearly 2,000 drugs in pipelines, accounting for 14.9% of national output (2nd only to CA) 7. There were 19 FDA approvals from companies based in MA 8. Despite challenges, Massachusetts maintains global leadership in biopharma innovation as highlighted by the Commonwealth being selected to host ARPA-H's Investor Catalyst Hub As always, there are challenges ahead, but with such a strong ecosystem of biotech startups, large pharmaceutical companies, and investors, the future remains bright for Biopharma in Massachusetts. Quoting BIOCOM's Joe Panetta: “I used to kind of kid around with people who would ask me about incubators in San Diego.
