Watching Mark Cavendish win his 35th stage of the Tour de France today was incredible! I realize few of you follow professional cycling, so let me summarize what happened and why this accomplishment should be inspiration to us all: 1. Winning *any* TdF stage is an enormous achievement, given how challenging the course is and how talented and strong the other riders are at that level. Cav just beat the previous record, which was already insanely high. 2. Cav is a sprinter, which means he has to ride a whole stage (think: 100+ miles on many days) with his team and then at the *end* push as hard as he possibly can. Sprinters are cycling's strategists: they have to calculate when to pull away, how to maneuver around the line, and get in front, while pushing 1200+ watts (which is a lot of power!). And doing all of this, with a full group of sprinters, is incredibly dangerous. Going at top speed, pushing at the top of your power, trying to squeeze past other riders -- if you're not careful, you crash. Today, he managed to pull away 100 meters from the line, even though he was boxed in. 3. This guy is almost 40 -- making him technically old enough to be a father to the youngest riders this year. Everyone else: "Will he retire? Isn't he well past his prime?" Cav: "Hold my beer." While I haven't met him (yet!), everyone I know who knows Cav has nothing but nice things to say. Was he aggressive and more prone to outbursts when he was just getting started? Yes -- and like so many other people have, he's matured. This is what hard work, dedication, and extreme focus looks like.

And that’s after coming in almost 40 minutes after the winner of stage 1, and barely making the time cut off. That’s when “never give up” gets real.

It is a pure win, without any advantage from accidents, weather, or an excellent teammate ( 😏 MVDP ). This would suit this record too...

Absolutely brilliant. I was gutted for him last year: really thought he was going to do it then until he fell. Can't help but wonder.how the team who chose not to include him back in 2022 feel today? He and Astana immortalized in the history books.
