Job Purpose

Primary School Classroom teachers collaborate with a full-time co-teacher or teaching assistant across languages, sharing the responsibility of the class. Co-teachers plan, implement, and assess learning, contributing to a successful Primary Years Programme (PYP). Teachers foster an atmosphere conducive to inclusive, transdisciplinary learning through the lens of inquiry, embedding visible thinking. The German language teacher will deliver PYP instruction primarily in German, providing opportunities for translanguaging and scaffolding.

This is a full-time position teaching the PYP curriculum in German to students in Primary School (5K to Grade 5) beginning August 1, 2024.

NOTE: This vacancy is a probable opportunity, based on a short-term coverage need. The vacancy would be temporary, for 6-12 months with the possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively plan inquiry-based lessons across subject boundaries, in a transdisciplinary manner with a co-teacher
  • Model cooperation and collaboration through the delivery of learning, in partnership with your co-teacher
  • Differentiate using data points that inform lesson design so that each child is challenged in their zone of proximal development
  • Develop relationships with students that support a restorative practices approach to building community and fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Clearly communicate expectations with students, check for understanding and pivot as appropriate
  • Assess learning and document students' progress.
  • Safeguard students by monitoring their physical and social-emotional safety in partnership with parents, administrators, and school counselors.
  • Build partnerships with students, parents, teachers, and colleagues to support the culture of “we.”
  • Create a safe place of learning which is intentionally inclusive where all voices are seen, heard, and valued
  • Build partnerships with families to support the success of learners (home-school connection).

Ideal candidates will have experience with a range of pedagogical approaches and will be excited by the opportunity to teach a diverse student body in an inquisitive and inquiry-based environment with integrity. The ideal candidate has demonstrated effective equitable and inclusive practices within and outside the classroom. A passion for teaching, flexible attitude, commitment to lifelong learning, and a sense of humor are essential.

Requirements

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • At least 3 year of teaching experience as a primary teacher
  • Bilingual proficiency in German and English
  • An understanding of the principles of second language acquisition and German reading/phonics progressions
  • Successful experience in an inquiry/transdisciplinary and/or IB PYP environment in German
  • Enthusiastic about teaching within a multicultural and multilingual environment
  • Flexibility of approach and a collaborative style
  • Experience and/or training in co-teaching
  • A commitment to equity and inclusion, inquiry and experiential-based pedagogy is
  • Willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and collaborative skills
