General Manager of Castleton Lodge at Killington - Grade 12

VSC-UP PAT Bargaining Unit - Exempt

Basic Function

Responsible for the management and facilities oversight of Castleton Lodge. Manage the lodge in a manner that reflects the expectations of University’s Resort and Hospitality Management program and provides a “learning lab” for students to practice hospitality management. This is a live-in position.

Characteristic Duties And Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, supervise, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate all Castleton Lodge operations, including operating policies and procedures to ensure the smooth operation of Castleton Lodge.
  • Provide administrative support for Castleton Lodge including but not limited to operational and budgetary management and coordination of various student support services such as transportation and mail services.
  • Oversee the daily living of all students residing at Castleton Lodge. Establish healthy mentoring relationships through daily interactions with students. Promote student health, safety, and well-being. Mediate conflicts, respond to student needs, and refer students to appropriate resources as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator of the Resort and Hospitality Management program for synergy between academic program and residence living.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all repairs, maintenance, and other facilities issues. Work with maintenance personnel to coordinate all remedies.
  • Serve as the liaison between the Office of Residence Life and Castleton Lodge. Assist in the planning and implementation of housing tasks at Castleton Lodge such as move-in, check-out, key control, and room changes. orientation, registration, and the end of year assessment.
  • Attend Student Life training as needed.
  • Participate in orientation and commencement events
  • Ensure compliance with the University Handbook. Document and assist with resolution of University policy violations including Student Code of Conduct violations.
  • Work with the Advancement Office to enhance the social media presence of Castleton Lodge and the Resort and Hospitality Management program, to ensure the accuracy and relevancy of content on the website, and to coordinate alumni engagement.
  • Serve as communication liaison between Castleton Lodge and the admissions office, and assist with prospective student visits.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external community members. Respond to concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Serve on University and community committees and task forces, and participate in other professional development activities at the direction of the Dean of Students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from the Dean of the School of Business and Professional Studies.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Participate in the selection of and supervise student Lodge assistant managers.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline, with masters desirable, plus two to four years of relevant resort/hospitality, business or student housing experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • Broad base of knowledge and skills related to resort/hospitality, business and college residence hall management.
  • Strong planning, administrative, budget management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform elementary repair and maintenance duties.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate various operational and support activities associated with residence life and student services. Ability to understand the problems that confront college students, exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting university policies, and relate well to fellow employees and members of the university community.
  • Good customer relation skills, ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of students, faculty and staff, as well as other external audiences.
