<span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Job Summary: <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">The Education Specialist ensures that all youth in both Clifford and McMurray HTP Group Homes receive appropriate education services and experience in all NYC DOE and Vocational Sites. The specialist will work in collaboration with DOE/Vocational school staff and with HTP Group Home staff to provide supports for the young people’s education and to ensure that all youth 14 years and older receive appropriate education services prior to discharge.

<span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Essential Functions

  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Act as a resource for caseworkers regarding educational opportunities for youth, including but not limited to: alternative schools, vocational education programs.
    • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">High school (Regent requirements, credits required, PSAT, transfers, safety/travel hardship transfer, suspension hearing).
    • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">HSE programs (types and availability of HSE programs, English and bilingual, HSE testing).
    • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Special Education needs (CSE evaluations, IEP diplomas, and appropriate placements).
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Coordinate the tutoring program by hiring tutoring services for HTP Residents who are behind academically
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Lead groups of youth in college preparation, including SAT prep, study skills, financial aid advising, ETV on-line applications, locating the right college, college tours, college fairs, advisement through the application process, and assisting child care staff, foster parents and birth parents.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Develop a specialty in all aspects of college preparation and ongoing support for foster youth who are attending college.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Acts as liaison for NYC Department of Education, accessing critical information from DOE databanks.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Provide up-to-date information on higher education opportunities and continuing education program to Caseworkers and Child Care staff for young adults who are college-bound.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Conduct support meetings for foster youth who are college students during vacation and college breaks.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Develop a monthly tracking system of youth education placement and progress.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Attend agency based and external training.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Submit reports as required to program leadership and QI
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Completes progress notes in CONNECTIONS (Education Tab) in accordance with agency standards for timely submission of documentation.
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Maintain accurate documentation and complete the timely entry of progress notes into CONNECTIONS in accordance with city, state and agency standards
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Work closely with Quality Improvement to ensure CQI (continuous quality improvement) of services rendered
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Locate appropriate vocational programs and complete all required admission and financial aid applications.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Other duties that may be assigned

<span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Qualifications

  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree preferred in Education, Social Work, School Psychology, or related field
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Strong knowledge of ACS mandates  
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">2+ years prior experience working with residential teens
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Strong knowledge of the specialized and alternative programs in NYC DOE
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">2+ years’ experience in educational services
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Knowledge of Connections
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Strong writing skills
  • <span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Applied experience working with Microsoft Office Suite
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Must be able to pass <span style="font-family:"Georgia",serif">Therapeutic Crisis Intervention<span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif"> training.
  • <span style="font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">For this role, COVID-19 vaccination is a requirement of the job

Salary:  $49,474.00/yr

Shift:  Monday-Friday, 10:00AM-6:00PM (with some flexibility)

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif">Physical Requirements:<span style="font-family:"Garamond",serif"> Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms. Ability to perform physical restraint of youth using approved restraint techniques. Physical clearances required and reevaluated annually.
