ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Founded in 1990, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is the first and largest global

organization focusing specifically on multiple myeloma. The IMF’s reach extends to more than

525,000 members in 140 countries worldwide. The IMF is dedicated to improving the quality of life

of myeloma patients while working toward prevention and a cure through our four founding

principles: Research, Education, Support, and Advocacy.


POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Development, Major Gifts is a vital position and integral to the IMF's fundraising efforts. This position works closely with other members of the development team and will be responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects that are capable of making gifts of $25,000 or more. This individual must possess a strong acumen for development to formulate and implement both short-term and long-term strategies for securing major gifts in collaboration with the Vice President of Development. Major gift donors and prospects can include individuals, corporations, and foundations. Primary responsibilities will be carried out through regular and frequent emails, phone calls, Zoom calls, and in-person visits with constituents.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards major gift donors and prospects through visits

and other forms of direct personal contact.

• Manage a portfolio of approximately 200-250 prospects with an emphasis on major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $25K-$250K or more.

• Conduct 12 visits per month and participate in solicitations to meet monthly, quarterly and

annual metrics and targets.

• Ensure that major gifts prospects are cultivated and solicited in an appropriate and deliberate

manner.

• Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and

lifetime giving potential of individual prospects.

• Provide quarterly and annual stewardship reports to present to donors in portfolio.

• Maintain and properly record data about prospects and donors in the donor tracking database

(Salesforce)

• Ensure stewardship activities for donor portfolio: including approval of gift acknowledgement

letters, thank you calls, email queries, pledge reminders, and progress reports.

• Collaborate with the VP of Development to identify new major gift sources.

• Responsible for actively developing fundraising skills through educational and training

resources and professional associations.


SKILLS/ ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Sound knowledge of practices and philosophy of charitable giving and donor/prospect relationship management.

• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills; strong presentation skills

and ability to communicate effectively with donors and a variety of stakeholders.

• Must be able to effectively organize and prioritize workload to meet constantly changing

demands.

• Demonstrated ability to work with a multidisciplinary fundraising team to meet milestones and

objectives.

• Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, set goals and meet

objectives.

• Demonstrate strong analytical skills, resourcefulness, curiosity, openness to learning and

flexibility.

• Detail-oriented with the ability to plan, organize, and work on multiple projects; make

effective timely decisions and meet deadlines under general guidance and supervision.

• Knowledge of fundraising software and databases; experience using Salesforce a plus.

• Occasional travel will be part of this position; ability to work occasional evenings and

weekends for events upon request

• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and

Outlook.

• Must be able to pass a background check


EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s Degree required with 5+ years of development experience

• At least one (1) year of experience focused on cultivation and stewardship of major

gifts

• The person in this position regularly communicates with others and must be able to exchange

accurate information with internal and external audiences in a variety of situations.

• Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while working on a

personal computer or commuting to meetings and events.

• Perform continuous operation of a computer and other office productivity items, such as a

calculator or copier.

• Frequently moves about inside an office or event building.

• Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 20lbs, bending and reaching throughout the day as needed.
