Your impact:

ThePioneerWoman.com is looking for a seasoned recipe developer and food expert to oversee recipe operations in our Birmingham-based test kitchen. This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing Birmingham team and produce top-quality content for millions of readers and fans. The deputy food director will work directly with the digital director, food director and deputy food editor to strategize recipe production for both digital and print, and build on the early success of ThePioneerWoman.com’s onsite video program.

Candidates should have a culinary degree and/or substantial professional kitchen experience, as well as experience producing and editing recipes for print and digital publications. For consideration, a resume must be submitted as a PDF, along with a cover letter and salary requirements.

What you'll do:

  • Manage all recipe production for The Pioneer Woman site and magazine
  • Develop original, on-brand recipes at a steady pace
  • Pitch and strategize recipe development with the SEO, kitchen and edit teams
  • Review all developed recipes and coordinate cross-testing and tastings
  • Work with developers to conceptualize new dishes and hone recipes
  • Write and/or review storyboards for recipe videos; review propping for still and video shoots
  • Help build freelance teams of local prop and food stylists for still and video shoots
  • Oversee the test kitchen team including the test kitchen manager
  • Communicate and collaborate with the food director on day-to-day kitchen operations, as well as special projects and partnership content
  • Take an active role on the culinary team in maintaining our editorial standards

Who you are:

  • A true food enthusiast who would happily engage in a long conversation about salt grain sizes or the merits of an air fryer
  • An experienced recipe developer with both print and video experience
  • A team player who will jump in to perform any task in the kitchen (recipe triage, recipe editing, food styling, menu writing) and who would roll up their sleeves and wash dishes if necessary
  • A voracious consumer of food content on all platforms who understands the food media landscape
  • A driven, curious strategist who’s willing to dive into data, pitch ideas and launch new projects year-round
  • A college graduate with a bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, creative writing, communications or business, plus a culinary degree or professional kitchen and test kitchen experience
  • A food media expert with at least 8 years of experience in a related field

The base salary for this role is $90,000. The base pay is subject to change and may be modified in the future .
