Overview

Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Biologist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Laboratory of Viral Diseases (LVD), Division of Intramural Research (DIR) .

Technical Requirements

  • Provide expertise in animal handling, including but not limited to: injections, viral infections, drug/vaccine administration, data collection (including IVIS imaging, blood draw, caliper measurements), necropsy and organ harvesting (including lymph nodes).
  • Provide expertise in common immunological techniques, including but not limited to: flow cytometry, immunofluorescence staining and imaging.
  • Provide expertise in molecular biology skills including but not limited to: protein gel electrophoresis, transfer, and Western blotting, isolation of DNA and RNA from mammalian cells and animal tissues, ELISA, transfection of mammalian cells.
  • Collect and maintain data and results of experiments using: Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Graphpad Prism, Photoshop, and Basic R Programming.
  • Perform experiments in a BSL-3 laboratory setting, following all safety protocols and complete all necessary training.
  • Perform experiments independently and able to perform tasks following protocols and instruction.
  • Perform basic laboratory maintenance including monitoring the levels of supplies, arranging for equipment repair/calibration, handling received orders.

Specific Qualifications

  • BS/BA in a scientific related field is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • These skills are highly desirable: basic knowledge of statistics, basic knowledge of virology (herpesviruses), expertise/experience with viruses; tittering, infection of tissue culture cells.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse laboratory population.
  • Effective communication skills working in a team atmosphere.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours when experimental needs require it.
