Athletic Director

Wilmington College (WC) is a career-oriented liberal arts institution affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends also known as the Quakers. Our beautiful main campus is in southwestern Ohio.

Wilmington College is accepting applications for the full-time administrative position of Director of Athletics.

The Director of Athletics is responsible for directing and leading the College's NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics program, club sports and campus recreation activities. Wilmington College is a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and participates in 18 varsity sports.

The Director of Athletics will serve students, faculty, staff, and alumni across the College to maintain excellence in its programs and promote the scholar-athlete experience. To ensure excellence, recruiting and retaining a diverse group of exceptional coaches and promoting the student success, engagement, and graduation in addition to striving for athletic achievements is paramount. The Director of Athletics provides administrative direction and oversight for intercollegiate athletics staff, programs, facilities, and activities. The Director of Athletics is responsible for overseeing the College athletic program including planning, implementing, and directing all administrative activities, budgeting, hiring and development of all coaches and athletics staff; strategic planning; and monitoring the college's intercollegiate athletic programs. The director is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, NCAA, OAC and college athletics regulations, administering departmental funds and accounts in a fiscally responsible manner and sustaining a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect at all levels.

In alignment with the College's strategic plan and the President's vision, the Director plays an integral role in the recruitment and retention of students and advancement of the College's philanthropic priorities. The Director will be expected to work closely with the Vice President for Admissions to implement a student-athlete recruitment strategy consistent with the College's admissions policies and goals. Further, the Director will partner with the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Vice President for Academic Affairs to promote student-athlete retention through the College's student success & engagement programs. Additionally, the Director will collaborate and coordinate with the Vice President for Advancement on both Athletic and College-wide philanthropic priorities.

The Director of Athletics reports to the President of the College, serves as a member of the President's Council, and will work closely and collaboratively with the senior administration to support the overall goals and objectives of the College.

Summary Of Duties And Responsibilities

  • Articulate and demonstrate the positive role of athletics in the furthering the educational mission and Quaker core values of the College (integrity, community, diversity, excellence, peace and social justice, respect for all persons, and service and civic engagement).
  • Provide strategic and visionary leadership of the College's athletics programs, in support of the College's strategic plan, including student-athlete recruitment and retention, as well as philanthropic priorities.
  • Build and sustain an athletics program that best positions Wilmington College to compete at the conference and national level, without sacrificing the identity and ethical standards of the institution.
  • Ensure compliance with the NCAA, the OAC, and Title IX rules and regulations.
  • Strong commitment to gender equity.
  • Retain, recruit, develop, and inspire a diverse group of successful coaches and athletic administrators.
  • Supervises Associate and Assistant AD, full and part time coaches, athletic equipment manager, athletic training staff, and Sports Information Director.
  • Develop and manage budgets for all operational areas of the program ensuring budgetary and fiscal accountability.
  • Develop shared departmental goals and ensure a continued and growing culture of competitive excellence.
  • Support building a strong sense of community among all student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, faculty, alumni, and supporters.
  • Support the College's commitment to a culture of openness and inclusion that values diversity of all people and ideas.

Job's Essential Duties

  • Oversee the operation of Wilmington College's intercollegiate athletic program.
    • Must be results-oriented and demonstrate a commitment to the college and department missions.
    • Coordinate, update and implement strategic planning process for athletics.
    • Be committed to the development of the whole student: mind, body, and spirit.
    • Ensure the program rewards student academic success, retention, and graduation, along with success on the field.
    • Work to enhance the student-athlete experience, including developing strategies for student-athlete input in the experience.
    • Regularly attend athletic contests.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the Vice President for Admissions, the Vice President for Student Development, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs to recruit and retain student-athletes and meet roster expectations.
    • Recommend team squad sizes and manage overall athletic recruitment process.
    • Enhance the recruiting process for coaching staff.
    • Conduct student-athlete surveys to assess the student-athlete experience.
  • Supervise athletics facilities and team travel.
    • Implement a monitoring and reporting program for assessing student-athlete course performance.
    • Working with the College's Business Office. Coordinate use with on-campus and off-campus groups.
    • Advance the master plan for the development of athletics facilities.
    • Coordinate team travel for athletics teams, including leasing and/or renting vehicles.
  • Coordinate the preparation of the Athletics Department budget and then monitor its implementation.
    • Approve schedules and contracts for all contests.
    • Approve all purchase orders, check requests, expense reports, and travel arrangements.
    • Oversee the department's office procedures and work.
  • Hire, mentor, guide and evaluate coaching and athletics staff.
    • Oversee the Head Athletic Trainer and athletic administrative staff, including game management, marketing, attendance promotion, and half-time games/entertainment.
    • Oversee the Sports Information Director's role and duties as assigned.
    • Coordinate or delegate the search process for open positions in the athletics department.
  • Comply with all rules and regulations set forth by the National Collegiate Athletics Association, Ohio Athletic Conference and Wilmington College.
    • Evaluate, approve, and submit, in cooperation with the Faculty Athletic Representative, eligibility forms of all student athletes to the eligibility chair.
    • Correspond with the NCAA on any special eligibility cases, such as hardships and other pertinent concerns.
    • Represent the institution within the NCAA and OAC governance structure.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the Vice President for Advancement to advance both athletic and College-wide philanthropic priorities, including but not limited to:
    • Participate in the college's annual and capital campaign projects.
    • Oversee the planning and implementation of the annual athletics department fundraising events.
    • Secure sponsorship for various athletics events, programs, and facilities.
    • Coordinate with the Alumni Office to develop alumni athletics events.
  • Serve as the Athletics Department's main liaison with various constituents.
    • Use the gameday experience to build community connections.
    • Develop and foster strong community relationships.
    • Collaborate with university marketing and PR relations in the preparation of press releases and the arrangement of media coverage for events not handled by the SID.
Qualifications

  • Master's degree required.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of proven athletic administrative leadership
  • Experience serving as an Athletic Director and coaching experience preferred.
  • Evidence of strong, strategic leadership and administrative skills.
  • Experience managing budgets, hiring/employee relations.
  • Work with the Alumni Office and Development to strengthen relationships with alumni and friends, while assisting in raising funds as directed.
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting and mentoring coaches on the recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.
  • Detailed knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, player eligibility and related functions is required.
  • Successful managerial experience and providing effective feedback.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Exceptional leadership and flexibility.
  • Understand the process of building and earning philanthropic support for the athletics department.
  • Ability to resolve issues expediently and creatively is required.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with effective consensus-building skills.
  • Ability to interpret, prioritize and advocate the strategic needs of the athletics department.
