How can you prioritize your marketing efforts on a limited budget?
The first thing we did was write a press sheet--before we had any press! It spoke to the interesting topics that we had a unique point of view on. And we attached it to every email we sent. Then, as press started writing about us, we built out the page even more and links in our signature. I still include it in everything I send. It builds a buzz and gets everyone excited--employees, customers, investors, and the world at large! To date we have spent barely anything in PR, marketing, or advertising while achieving 100s of millions of positive impressions globally. You got this!

What are some effective ways to involve customers in your corporate social responsibility initiatives?
Customer rewards should be economic as well as environmentally driven. In our platform, everyone who participates in the circular economy can scan a QR code and see the water, chemicals, carbon emissions, waste, and dollars saved by the actions they take. That’s an algorithm we built developed with the support of MIT. Democratizing access to resources is the future!

How can you overcome resistance to change when introducing a corporate entrepreneurship initiative?
I agree, but I have also found that incentives work best. When employees, customers, and stakeholders can clearly see the ROI, along with the mission and values, it drives a willingness to participate, with actions and results. Too often we forget the economy in “circular economy”. Let’s demonstrate how innovation saves everyone time, money, and resources. Then it’s a win-win-win for people, planet, and profit. And how do you say no to that?!

How can you effectively handle customer complaints as a customer success manager at an early-stage startup?
In my experience a lot of technology companies are tools. They sell their offering to a customer and it’s up to the customer to engage. We have found what sets companies apart are those that offer solutions to a customer’s problem. And then they actually drive the solution and deliver a result in a way that is quick, easy, and cost-effective for a customer to adopt. This drives the ROI and enterprise adoption. Let’s build solutions that make sense for people, planet, and profit!
