The Mars Science Laboratory’s (MSL) discrete event simulator sequence generator (SEQGEN) is used to perform resource-driven planning of mission activities, design series of requests into their resultant space craft commands, and flag violation errors in modeling commands, flight rules, and mission specifications. To manage the complexity of creating these models in a large development team, it is important to catch regressions early on. We developed a novel program that allows us to encapsulate SEQGEN test runs in JUnit-like test cases, RuleTest. RuleTest enables us to catch regressions quickly by running our SEQGEN tests on CI servers like Bamboo or Hudson whenever we commit updates to our models. As any single instance of SEQGEN does not fully utilize the processing power of modern machines, RuleTest was engineered with concurrent execution in mind: RuleTest will scale the number of concurrent SEQGEN processes to be roughly twice the number of virtual threads (usually twice the number of processor cores) available to the build host. Second, the RuleTest is data-driven, as we use XML test definitions to add or remove tests of our model. Furthermore, the translation to Java unit test cases (TestNG test cases) is invisible. Instead of generating Java source files, compiling them, and then running them in three Java VM instances, we run them in one pass. RuleTest generates the Java source code in memory, compiles them in place, injects them into the current classloader, and finally, runs them in the same JVM. These features allow us to test of our spacecraft models efficiently. Aside from the performance boosts described above, RuleTest also generates JUnit-compatible test results. In addition to the results XML, RuleTest instruments the HTML test report with additional links to allow developers to investigate differences from test baselines. RuleTest is packaged with command-line scripts that allow model developers to quickly add & run new tests from the command line
