He also believed in fostering other qualities in these students, including leadership, community service and diversity. Today, more than 600 John B. Ervin Scholars have graduated from Washington University in St. Louis.

Howard Nemerov Writing Scholars Program, Washington University in St. Louis
The Howard Nemerov Writing Scholarships are designed for students with a true dedication to writing and exceptional writing talent. Scholars participate in a series of educational experiences designed to meet the needs and interests of writers, including enrollment in the Howard Nemerov Writing Seminar, submission of their work to campus publications, attendance at and participation in writing-related social activities, and the earning of a minor in English writing.
