According to GlobalData, the U.S. secondhand apparel market grew 11%, or seven times faster than the broader retail apparel market, to $43 billion last year. The report estimates that resale sales online and at traditional thrift stores could reach $73 billion by 2028. #resale #retail #apparel #retailsales

The brand houses of VF, PVH, Deckers, Pentland, Kontoor, Amer, Wolverine and Boardriders featured in these insights own, or manage, a who’s who of global fashion and sports brands. Several weeks back I posted about the major sports brands and how their most popular sources of talent are each other (see link in comments). The brand houses are quite different: they barely recruit from each other. They do recruit from the major sports brands: Nike, adidas and lululemon are predictably the most popular. Despite the challenging trading conditions all these businesses have increased their total number of employees over the last year except for Boardriders (-3%) and Wolverine who were pretty close to flat. The rate of attrition varies from Kontoor at just 8% (great in any market conditions) to 17% for PVH. With the number of lay-off activities over the last year it’s not possible to draw any conclusions from this statistic about the impact of culture and leadership on employee retention. There is one notable absence from this list - Authentic Brands. After looking at the data for AB we concluded that recent acquisitions skewed the available data. Linkedin currently only makes it possible to link some of AB’s brands to the parent company and misses others that should be included for any insights on them to be meaningful. The data used for this analysis does not include part time employees but does full time store level employees. These will impact the data differently depending on the different proportions of direct operated retail (VF and PVH have much larger retail estates than Boardriders for example). See the bottom of the post for some key points on how this data was put together. 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 👉 Luxury Apparel LVMH continues to take significant market share over its competing peers across Europe with Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss competing for second place. However looking at it on a per-country level reveals a much more nuanced story, with each country manifesting its own competitive dynamics. For example, Ralph Lauren in France, Christian Dior in the UK, and Gucci in Italy are fighting for that second place. Mother’s Day sparked a promising trend in the jewelry industry this year. With sales surpassing last year's figures, US consumers are showing signs of increased demand. In May, jewelry sales rose by 1.8% year over year, with a 2% increase in average expenditure per item. The Jewelry Index reflects this positive shift, with a continuous upward trend since March. Notably, sales surged by 5% on May 10-11 compared to the same period in 2023. Retailers are also optimistic about the year ahead, as evidenced by the positive outcomes at recent trade shows in Las Vegas. Exhibitors reported heightened buyer demand, indicating a strong market outlook. However, the demand for loose lab-grown diamonds at JCK was subdued, resulting in notably reduced prices. Lately, RetailX has issued its yearly issue on Fashion Sector and came up with a certain number of insights. I summarised them for your convenience. The 2024 issue highlights significant growth in the global fashion market, revealing a vibrant recovery to $673 billion in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Here are some of the critical findings and insights from the report: 1. Market Growth and Regional Dominance:   - The fashion market experienced an 8% annual growth with apparel being the largest segment, followed by footwear and accessories.   - Asia emerged as the leading market, generating nearly 50% of global fashion sales, significantly outpacing the Americas and Europe. 2. Consumer Spending Trends:   - Despite high volumes, average spending per consumer in Asia remains lower compared to the more affluent regions like Europe and the Americas. In contrast, Australasian consumers spend the most on fashion annually. 3. E-commerce and Physical Retail Dynamics:   - E-commerce has seen robust growth, particularly in India and China where more than two-thirds of consumers shopped online. Let's talk about our partner: Vestiaire Collective. The peer-to-peer marketplace is one of our favorites to shop pre-loved luxury fashion, but that's not why we're bringing them up. For Earth Day, they launched their 2024 Circularity Report, which revealed that neither consumers, nor the planet can afford fast fashion. Their consumer survey demonstrated that due to several factors (number of wears, resale value, etc.), brand new fast fashion items ultimately have a 33% higher cost-per-wear than the luxury pre-loved items available on Vestiaire Collective. Good article on Puma outlined by Ken Pucker on how they were able to decouple increased growth from lowering emissions. Impressive data that since 2017, Puma has doubled revenues to $9.3 billion, while cutting carbon emissions by 30%. On a per unit basis, that is a 66% reduction. At my last company, I created a model to show that the consolidation of markets, with a calendar adjustment could reduce emissions by 18% allowing a reduction in carbon emissions and creating a savings from air to sea freight alone. This is one of the highest impact adjustments companies can make to really lower emissions.

The investment on becoming more sustainable in the fashion industry is still extremely small. Even a brand like Ganni whom many consumers see as sustainable published in their report for 2023 that they spent 0.60% of total revenue on responsibility down from 2022 1.10%. This week seeing the closure of brands such as Mara Hoffman is also depressing. The only effort to move the needle has mainly been driven by a combination of legislation and more mindful production of goods. The system is still flawed due to its drive for continuous projection of double digit sales increases. The saddest part is the huge increase of product thru Shein and Temu flooding the market with cheap, questionable labor and possible toxic product at an accelerated rate never seen before. For those who are not aware From 2017 through to the first half of 2023, Shein revenues grew 20x, from $1.5 billion to $40 billion, surpassing Amazon as the single most downloaded shopping app in the US while racing past Zara for the overall number one spot in US fast fashion.  The fair wage and abuse of garment workers is another problem created by low priced fast fashion. The take away sadly from this years Global Fashion Summit is that though there is some investment in innovation we simply are not moving as an industry fast enough to reduce emissions nor improving the system to produce less. I wish on this Friday I had better news but sadly we need consumers and leaders to drive real change.

Guess appoints Andrew Rosen as CEO of Rag & Bone. The appointment comes nearly two months after Guess Inc. and WHP Global will complete the acquisition of the New York-based brand. In February, Guess and WHP Global announced a final deal to acquire Rag & Bone, which was completed in April. Under the terms of the agreement, Guess paid more than $57 million for the purchase, in addition to contributions from WHP Global, according to a press release.
