🐘 Exciting new AI-powered research from Colorado State University, ElephantVoices, and Save the Elephants! Machine learning has revealed that African elephants use unique "names" to address each other, and scientists have successfully learned how to call them by name using ML! 🤯 Researchers identified name-like components in elephant vocalizations, allowing them to address specific individuals. When the researchers played back recordings of the calls, elephants responded by calling back or approaching the speaker. 🎶📢 This discovery opens up a world of possibilities for understanding and protecting these magnificent creatures. 🎉 But how could this same tech be applied in a business context❓ Here are some ideas: 1️⃣ Customer Personalization Just as elephants respond to their unique calls, a retail company could use machine learning to analyze customer service interactions and identify unique vocal patterns or preferences for each customer. This could help tailor marketing campaigns, product recommendations, and customer service interactions to each individual's preferences. 2️⃣ Improved Team Communication Similar to identifying individual elephant calls, a manufacturing company could use machine learning to analyze team meetings and identify areas where communication could be improved. For example, the system might highlight that one team member dominates discussions or that certain topics cause confusion, helping to improve team dynamics and overall communication. 3️⃣ Predictive Maintenance By analyzing the sounds made by HVAC systems, machine learning could identify patterns that indicate maintenance needs, much like how researchers identified specific elephant calls. This could alert maintenance staff before a breakdown occurs, improving efficiency and reducing downtime. 4️⃣ Sales Forecasting Analyzing customer service calls or other voice interactions, machine learning could predict future sales trends or customer behavior. Retail companies might identify rising interest in a particular product or service, allowing them to adjust inventory or marketing strategies accordingly. 5️⃣ Healthcare #ML can analyze patient speech patterns to identify signs of various medical conditions, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or depression. For example, the system might detect that a patient's speech is becoming slower or more slurred, which could be an early warning sign of a neurological disorder. 6️⃣ Education #ML can analyze student speech patterns to identify areas where they may need additional support. I thought that OpenAI's announcement of GPT-4o was pretty impressive, and it all boils down to the focus on users. There's still a lot of discussion about how various models will achieve better performance according to certain benchmark metrics or come closer to achieving general AI, whatever that means. It is true that the performance of an AI model is relevant to its capabilities, but let's not forget that when it comes to impacting the lives of regular people, you need technology that's easy to use and understand, and that's where the GPT-4o demo really stood out. First up, there's the desktop app, which is great to see. It would be very easy for OpenAI to say, "No, we're just going to stick with the web perpetually and that desktop app use is not worth our time." Producing a desktop app is probably not a huge lift for the company, but it also shows that the company is thinking about how people use their tech in real-world situations. Similarly, the voice assistant demos that were shown as part of the GPT-4o release have obvious implications for voice assistants of all sorts. These demos were not perfect, but they worked reasonably well and in some parts, they actually showcased capabilities that already exist but that people may not know about. For example, the voice assistant is available today in prior versions of GPT-4o, and it uses a voice suspiciously close to Scarlett Johansson, which I've seen some people remark on. This is not new (and before you write a hot take about the assistant's flirty voice, note that it's not the default voice, and one of five available). The point is that at the moment, the most capable AI models can do things that are well beyond the expectations of an average user. The issue, however, is actually getting the model to do what you want and making the model easy to interact with. Slapping a chat interface onto an AI model was a great start, but it was only a start, in the same way that developing a graphical user interface for an operating system was just a new start, not a final destination, for operating systems. There's a lot of practical user interface improvements that could be made so much so that I think even if we saw absolutely zero improvements in the capabilities of AI models, we'd still see software developers spinning up new software based on them for years, probably decades. In the long run, I do not think it will be the company with the best AI model in terms of benchmark performance that sees the most success and makes the most useful tech. As usual with technology, the company that does the best will be the one that is most successful in connecting people with its technology. What OpenAI's demos are showing to me is that it is thinking about this seriously, and that is good news for ChatGPT in the near future. #ai #llm #openai #chatgpt4o #chatgpt https://lnkd.in/gzwMc3Nm

09/05/2024 WIRED recently published a comprehensive guide on how to optimize interactions with anthropomorphized chatbots like Claude, developed by OpenAI. As such chatbots become increasingly integrated into personal as well as professional realms, it is crucial to understand how to make the most of these AI-powered service providers. Claude is designed to be highly interactive, emulating the interaction with a human contact. It can perform a wide array of functions, making it an indispensable tool for business communication, inventive thinking, brainstorming sessions, and more. However, optimizing the user experience with Claude requires some strategies. For instance, users need to set the tone of the conversation. They should explicitly establish the parameters of the chat, determining the level of creativity, direct objectivity, and whether the interaction should be professional or casual. Claude can remember the context of an ongoing conversation, but it doesn’t retain past interactions or personal data between sessions. Hence, if the bot doesn't respond as anticipated, it is best to rephrase your query or request another time. Keywords like "imagine", "brainstorm", "debate" can also instruct Claude about the mode of the conversation. There are also system messages that guide Claude's behavior. Once the chatbot "understands" these messages, they can be removed. The team behind Claude is committed to its continuous improvement, frequently refining the AI based on user feedback. The problem has never been the existential risks of AI. The problem has been misapplication of AI to problems that it is in no way, shape, or form ready for. We need to address the problems of AI today, whether it be giving people deceptive medical information, perpetuating bias, or providing AI-washing excuses for who lives and dies.
