I hate starting off my morning by sending off my NEW client an email letting them know that their logo design was done in a wrong software and would not work and try to explain to them how and why which is a better software to use. Would not work on the print side and even for a t-shirt design, this other designer used a cheap software (which I wont mention) but just say they used a Raster base software not a Vector base software. To me that tells me they are not sure what they are doing and not asking all the question on how the logo will be used in the future. This makes me very angry that this client will have to start over with the design, even trying to fix it and even trying to do a little Image Tracing on it to see if I could save it did not work. It would take longer to fix and all the type looked soft and had rough edges, even trying to bump up the PPI resolution as well. In my email I told her that I feel I can speak on this for 2 factors: Factor 1 over 30 years in the print and design business Factor 2 I am a college professor of design and I teach this and I have never taught my student to use that certain software to create a logo design. I hope she understands where I am coming form and not being a butt head or some arrogant designer trying to take her for more money. My question is why do people do this and think graphic design is a simple thing and don't think how important it is in a brand and a business. There is so much more you need to know before you head into a logo design and sit down with your client and ask all the proper question so your design works and there will be minimum changes as you go through the design process to brand out a new company. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) In-House Conference. Not only did I get to connect with many talented professionals in the design industry, but I also had the privilege of moderating a highly relevant and timely discussion titled "The Need for Speed." In today's fast-paced environment, the demand for quick turnarounds without compromising on quality is ever-present. During the session, we talked about the intricacies of managing expectations and the importance of efficient workflows. This discussion was particularly timely, as we introduced a prioritization method into the Creative Studio last year, which has been a game-changer for us. We also delved into the various software tools we use to manage our workflows. In our Studio, we rely on Function Point (we love it!), while others shared their experiences with Notion, Teams, and ClickUp. It’s so cool to connect with others to hear the “real deal”, and pick and choose what could help in our day-to-day. AI was another hot topic! It's fascinating to see how most designers use AI daily, yet many studios still lack policies for its use. This is an area that needs urgent action. What’s your problem? This is the question every designer should be asking at the start of any project with a client. Businesses hire a designer because there is some problem they are trying to solve. Start every project by asking questions until you figure out what those challenges are. Then scope the project based on what they need, not what you want to design.

STOP DOING THAT ➡️ DO THIS INSTEAD !! 🥴 Social media is inundated with this message, especially in the realm of design education. When I applied to the Design Program at Western Washington University, I wasn't sure if I wanted to be a designer. To be honest, I wasn't sure if it was a crowd I wanted to be a part of. From the outskirts, it seemed like an exclusive group with lots of insider knowledge. Coming into the design program, I'd never used a single Adobe app. Many of my classmates had taken design classes in high school and knew things like: where to find the best stock imagery or which were "cool" fonts to use and which weren't. 😯 I didn't feel like I knew the right things to belong. One day, I must have exposed some of this imposter syndrome. One of my teachers looked over my shoulder while I was working on an assignment and said something I'll never forget: "Just get scrappy with it." (Shoutout to Professor Pablo 📢) There may be a most efficient way of doing something in a design program... But I don't really care. 🤫 'Just get scrappy with it' has defined my life moving forward. It has applied to so much more than figuring out how to design a logo in Adobe Illustrator. No, you don't know everything. Just get scrappy with it. You'll figure it out. It may be messy at first, but it tidies up real nice the more and more you practice. Don't let the pressure of perfection stop you from just...trying. (OH and also, it turns out designers tend to be really cool human beings who think about things in a very cool way.)
