This is a great article from Modern Healthcare. At Sanford Health, I am so glad cybersecurity is an organizational wide accountability and isn’t taken for granted. Here are a few key takeaways from the article. Cybersecurity needs to be a top priority and a shared goal across all areas of your health system operations. You can’t buy your way into a risk free environment. Healthcare is an industry designed around connectivity and interoperability. Third and fourth party risk needs to be given proper attention. Having a Rapid Response Plan, not only for your security operations center, but also for your enterprise leadership team, is invaluable when the tough stuff happens.

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP's take got me: "CMS is recognizing the role of digitally enabled care in improving access and outcomes." They also propose these new models "present health tech companies with opportunities to target new markets" because of the new/extra funding—such as viewing state Medicaid offices as new partner opportunities, which I've been seeing a lot of talk about recently in my feed. What do you think? I guess being in New Mexico, where almost half of our state is covered by Medicaid, Medicaid and MCOs have been a primary strategic partner/target market for 15+ years, and a somewhat omnipotent source driving most investment and initiatives. ------------------ More about the models: The Transforming Maternal Health (TMaH) model will issue agreements to up to 15 state Medicaid agencies to develop and implement a whole-person approach to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. The Innovation in Behavioral Health (IBH) model will develop and implement state-administered approaches which integrate behavioral, physical, and social supports to coordinate and manage care for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries with moderate-to-severe mental health conditions or substance-use disorders (SUD). I thought to myself, "wait, aren't we already doing that?" But they clarified: through the new models, CMS is encouraging states and providers to invest in technology and supporting infrastructure. ------------------ 🎉 What I'm excited about: Continued support for entities to get connected and the continued case for HIEs to expand their capabilities. Specifically, EHRs, HIEs, and remote patient monitoring (RPM). AND.... 🎉 "Additionally, CMS will support states with implementing data infrastructure to enable collection of Health-Related Social Needs (HRSN) data and referral to support resources." ------------------ 🤯 What I didn't realize: "It is estimated that only 6% of behavioral health facilities and 29% of substance use disorder treatment centers in the U.S. utilize EHRs, whereas nearly 4 in 5 office-based physicians (78%) leverage an EHR platform today 🤯 I'm having a hard time following along with all the new models coming out of CMMI, though 😉 Interesting piece all around, good info.

As Walmart and Optum exit the telehealth business, and VillageMD and others exit or reduce primary care, Midi Health has found its footing with remarkable speed in addressing the unmet mid-life health needs of women. Midi’s telehealth/primary care 3.0 care model blends women’s needs with a virtual first technology paired with physicians and appropriate referrals to health systems and specialists. A must, no brainer offering for employers…. Assuming the chart is accurate, or close. Let's realize that insurance provides no treatment and other than paying the bills does exactly nothing for health. They like to call themselves health plans, so we don't call them bill payers. Then there are many other forms of intermediary that also do not provide any care or health. The system has converted from transactions to financially support caregiving, into caregivers and patients supporting profit taking transactions. This is upside down.

A top down approach to tech adoption will never work in healthcare. While this approach may work in other industries where liability lies on the executive team, in healthcare liability more often rests with the clinician. At the end of the day we answer to the medical authorities which regulate our medical license. To be blunt, while painful its okay if I get fired because I do not adopt new technologies adopted by my institution. Its not okay and my entire medical career is in jeopardy if I do not follow the regulations set out by my provincial college of physician and surgeons. Part of which is to maintain the standard of care and follow a patient centric approach to healthcare. Technology adoption in healthcare requires a bottoms up approach to adoption. You need buy-in from clinicians and payors. Both are necessary and neither alone is sufficient. I realize I did not say you need buy-in from patients but I am assuming this is a given. #healthcare #technology #innovation #physician

Absolutely, great insights Rock Health. Focussing on what you're best at can be key. Optum and Walmart have struggled because they tried to do too much. Pure-play virtual health providers, like Amazon in retail, could excel by specializing and creating their own space. It's like playing to your strengths rather than spreading yourself too thin. $1.6 billion. That's what UnitedHealth Group projects as the total earnings impact in 2024 of the February Change Healthcare #ransomware attack. This includes both direct response costs (e.g. platform restoration and increased medical care expenditures) and business disruption impacts (e.g. lost revenue). The figure is now so large that it shows up in the net earnings calculation as part of the first-quarter 2024 financial results announced on Tuesday. And remember that UnitedHealth hasn't yet disclosed the amount of personal #data breached in the hack - it needs to do this within 60 days of learning about the breach, and that time expires next week. Will Optum / United Health Group materially benefit from the Change Healthcare Cyberattack? ... And should regulators get involved? ... So, as I mentioned in a post sometime last week, the Change Healthcare cyberattack and disruption will lead to private healthcare provider organizations going out of business... The fact is that many private healthcare practice simply don't have the cash on hand to float operations through the cash flow disruption caused by their clearing house going offline for long periods of time... So, when Change Healthcare shut down, there was some concern about what would happen to these cash-strapped provider organizations when the money got turned off... Sure, Optum Pay extended funding relief offerings for providers who were affected by the outage... But these were loans, not advances on remittances...which means, they have to be paid back. Even if there are no fees or interest on the advances, it will still impact provider cash flow going forward, as I'm sure the recovered funds will come in as a trickle rather than a windfall... So, why do I say that United Health Group will benefit from this situation? Because they've already sought emergency approval to purchase one distressed clinical practice in Oregon back in mid-March 2024... Because it was an emergency acquisition, this request bypassed the State's review of the sale... I would assume that we are likely to see more of these types of acquisitions, as many provider organizations experienced significant financial impact as a result of the disruption... So Change Healthcare (owned by UHG) goes down, causing a cashflow disruptions to provider organizations, and UHG then goes in and buys those distressed organizations, and will most likely profit from their operations in the coming years... And these acquisitions would arguably not have been on table if it weren't for the Change Healthcare disruption... My question is: what is the right course of action here? Sure, you can say that regulators shouldn't allow UHG to "profit" from a situation for which one of its subsidiaries are at fault... But then what do you do about the distressed provider organizations? Let them fail? It's a complicated issue, for sure...and it will be interesting to see how this all transpires in the coming months as regulators, providers, and payers grapple with the issue as it continues to unfold... #healthcare #healthcareconsolidation #mergers #healthcareacquisitions #cyberattack
