Surveys are tough in the WordPress space, because they are only touching a small percentage of WordPressers. Which is likely typical of any survey. And each survey must be looked at on who the source was and their audience. But still we learn some interesting things as we do in this one.

Using ChatGPT to WRITE your content? You’re doing it wrong. It should be your editor, not your writer. Try recording a voice memo with your thoughts on the subject, or type a bullet point list. Then, use a prompt like “Based on this pasted content, write a blog article. Only use information that is provided, don’t add anything or make anything up. Use a similar vocabulary and writing style as the pasted content.”

Fascinating analysis in this Rand Fishkin analysis of leaked Google API documents. The takeaway I'm most intrigued by: we've passed the era of being able to build a (small) brand via SEO. Today, the best SEO investment most small companies and startups can make is not in search-optimized content but in building their brand. Why? Because one of the most important search signals is user behavior. So if enough people search your company or product name, click through SERPs until they get to your website, then stay on that website (because they found what they wanted), Google will eventually start showing your website higher on SERPs to that type of user. https://lnkd.in/gDtq2Ecn?

It would be nice to go a week or so without another major Google thing happening. Anyway... for those who didn't hear, an anonymous source shared leaked Google documentation showing that some things they had denied were algorithm factors actually are, or at least were at some point. Note: that doesn't *necessarily mean they're ranking factors, although some are. A lot of us SEOs kind of already assumed most of this. User click data, brand importance, etc. There are, of course, some things that are really nice to have verified. Clicks, CTR, long vs. short clicks, and user data influencing rankings 2. Use of Chrome browser clickstreams to power Google Search (using user click data to inform Sitelinks, etc) 3. Certain sites being "whitelisted" as authorities on particular topics 4. Click data being used to weight links in search results You can read the article to read all the implications. The takeaway for me (discussed also in this article) is that bigger brands are going to do better. Which, again, we know. However, it's more important than ever to build your brand. Not just through SEO but through all the channels that make sense. for you: social media, trade shows, advertising, PR... make your brand the known, trusted source for all things related to your business. Typedesk - All my canned text for emails I send a lot, chatgpt prompts I'm constantly using, my personal bio, company bio and more. Intention - Chrome extension where you add a list of distracting sites and it gives you a time limit and forces you to say what you're doing if you claim its for work Feedly - RSS feeds 4 lyfe

Content marketers aren't copywriters. That's not to say that they can't serve that function, especially when the organization is small and everyone is wearing multiple hats. But as you grow, that shouldn't be the focus. Content marketing teams should be creating a strategy, running content programs, and working with demand generation to serve content to the right people at the right time. They shouldn't only be reviewing landing page copy and making sure blog posts follow the company style guide. If that's how content marketing is spending their time, you're doing your team (and your entire organization) a disservice.
