6 Things Eye Doctors Wish You'd Stop Doing at Your Eye Exams ---Skipping the Dilated Eye Exam (or Not Being Prepared for It)--- Pupil dilation — where your eye doctor puts drops in your eyes to make your pupils larger, allowing them to see the back of your eye — "is a crucial part of the eye exam," says William Hogue, OD, an optometrist with VRMNY in NYC. "It lets us check for things like glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, macular degeneration and hypertensive and diabetic retinopathy — which can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated." Yes, a dilated exam can be inconvenient, especially because it can temporarily blur your vision and make your eyes more sensitive to light (which can also make it harder to drive home). But it's worth it, experts say. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gz6FCj-V

Treatments Show Promising Results for Diabetes-Related Eye Diseases “We have many drugs that can cause a significant two-step improvement in DRSS,” said Richard F. Spaide, MD, an ophthalmologist with Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York. “The problem was the treatment did not cause an improvement in visual function,” said Dr. Spaide. “Up until now, the change in DRSS by itself was not enough to garner FDA approval. The recent approval of drugs causing complement inhibition in the treatment of geographic atrophy may have indicated a change in philosophy at the FDA. These drugs were approved even though patients did not show any functional benefits, and we do not treat patients unless they have some functional benefit,” he said. 👓💡 There is a lot of hype around blue light glasses but do they actually work? Our own William Hogue, OD, MS has the latest in Spy! https://lnkd.in/gjvSyVsY You might be wondering if these trendy specs are just a fashion statement or a real game-changer for your eye health. 🤔 Well, let's break it down: Blue light glasses CAN help reduce eye strain caused by prolonged screen time. 📱💻 But remember, they're not a magical solution. 🧙♂️ They work by filtering out a portion of blue light, which can be helpful, especially in the evening. BUT, here's the twist: the best way to protect your eyes is still the 20-20-20 rule. 🕐 Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and focus on something 20 feet away. 👀 So, do blue light glasses work? YES, but they're part of a broader eye-care strategy. Don't ditch the breaks, blink often, and don't forget your regular eye exams! 👁️ #EyeWisdom #BlueLightFacts #eyephysician #retinaspecialist #eyecare #eyetips #bluelight #optometrist #nycdoctors

👀 It's National Eye Exam Month! 🔍🗓️ Take a moment to prioritize your eye health and wellness this August! 👁️ Regular eye exams are key to maintaining clear vision and detecting potential issues early on. As a general guideline, here's what the American Optometric Association (AOA) suggests for regular eye exams: Children: Infants should have their first eye exam between 6 to 12 months of age. Preschool-age children should have another exam at age 3, and then again before starting school. School-age children and adolescents: Children between ages 6 to 18 should have their eyes checked annually or as recommended by their eye care professional. Adults: For adults with good eye health and no vision correction needs, a comprehensive eye exam every two years is recommended up to age 60. After age 60, annual eye exams are advised due to the increased risk of age-related eye conditions. Adults with risk factors: If you have certain risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of eye conditions, or wear contact lenses, you may need more frequent eye exams. Follow the advice of your eye care professional in such cases. #EyeHealth #NationalEyeExamMonth #Wellness #VisionCare #HealthyEyes #SeeClearly #EyeCare #HealthAndWellness #AugustAwareness #eyephysicians #nycdoctor #retinaspecialists #nyc
