As a heat wave grips Arizona and the Southwest, surgeons at the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center are seeing an increase in elderly patients with severe burn injuries from contact with hot pavement and other surfaces. At a news conference this week, Dr. Kevin Foster, burn center director, was joined by 71-year-old burn survivor Robert Woolley of Phoenix, who last year suffered serious burns after falling on hot gravel in his backyard. The burn center is seeking to raise public awareness of burn risks associated with extreme heat. Story: https://lnkd.in/ggDNabna

Arizona Burn Center Director Dr. Kevin Foster today joined the Phoenix Fire Department in reminding residents to leave fireworks to the professionals. While the state may have legalized the sale of some fireworks, most fireworks are still illegal to set off in the city of Phoenix. The only fireworks that are OK are novelty fireworks like sparklers, but even those can be dangerous and lead to severe burns. “All of these injuries are preventable,” said Dr. Foster. “Just because these fireworks are legal does not mean they are safe. Anything that explodes or catches on fire is potentially dangerous to human beings.”

It’s been two weeks since we safely moved over 200 patients in beds or wheelchairs to large, private rooms in the new Valleywise Health Medical Center. This news report captures how our employees, physicians, and volunteers worked tirelessly to plan and execute this massive operation. “It’s a historic moment and the fulfillment of a promise to the people of Maricopa County to build a new public teaching hospital and safety net system of care for the residents of our beautiful Valley and throughout the Southwest,” said Steve Purves, President & CEO. https://lnkd.in/gxMgVf_E

Looking back on the busy 1971 move, Mary Rose Wilcox, a member of the Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board of Directors, remembers when hundreds of patients were transferred from the old county hospital to the then Maricopa County General Hospital. This week, we’re getting ready to move about 200 patients to the new Valleywise Health Medical Center. Check out the video here: https://lnkd.in/gBsQMaJZ
