As platforms such as Fortnite and Roblox become full-service platforms for digital life, the music industry is moving beyond virtual concerts. These days, musicians are integrating more deeply into virtual worlds to promote their album releases and bring in new fans. Music has been a key element of the #metaverse from the start. In 2020, Travis Scott’s virtual concert inside #Fortnite was many of its participants’ first introduction to the metaverse concept. But although Scott’s concert reportedly grossed roughly $20 million through in-game item sales, it was a one-off event that was not tied to an album release or marketing campaign. Since the concert, Scott has never returned to Fortnite. #Roblox In this piece by Alexander Lee, we speak to David Cushman of Warner Music Group, Joseph Khoury of Atlantic Records, Yonatan Raz-Fridman of Supersocial Inc., and Bryan Biniak of Songtradr.

We're delighted to see our founder and CEO, Yonatan Raz-Fridman, quoted in Alexander Lee's piece, with a mention of the latest innovation from Supersocial - The Rolling Stones activation in Beat Galaxy, our music world on #Roblox built in partnership with Universal Music Group. “Instead of the labels and the artists spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to build a one-off activation, they are now able to come into ‘Beat Galaxy’ and activate with artists inside, with a virtual music shop, a track runner [mini game] and integration of the music into the world,” said Yonatan Raz-Fridman, CEO of Roblox studio Supersocial, which designed and built the experience. Finding a meaningful way to integrate music into metaverse platforms is still in its early stages, and we're excited about the possibilities.

“You don’t drop something that is just going to be engaging because it’s a brand or social space, it has to really be meaningful for the players” The importance of the core game loop has never been more clearly shown than Netflix’s recent Nextworld experience. It looks absolutely stunning, it features some of the biggest brands and IP in the world, and yet because the core game loop is lacking, so does the audience engagement. “If you are an investor in Roblox you might be concerned about the health of the business, but I don’t think anything that came through in the report should worry you” if you're a brand or IP owner investing in the platform. Roblox’s recent earnings report sent the stock price down over 22%, but was that an overreaction? What do the numbers behind the business actually say about their trajectory and how investors, brands, and IP owners alike should be thinking about the platform and its utilization in the near future? Join Supersocial Director of Business Development Matthew Kanterman, CFA on Into The Metaverse, as he breaks down this earnings report and a handful of the other biggest stories from the last few weeks of metaverse and gaming related news! Still a large misconception out there and the biggest pushback we get in discussions around bringing brands and IP to Roblox is the demographic reach of the platform. Although the platform still skews very young, it is by no means a platform just for kids anymore. As the following chart shows, this is a platform with an increasingly older user base (41% of DAU 17+) and one that, differently from other UGC gaming platforms, has a much more even split in gender identity.
