In kerogen-rich unconventional plays, estimates of OOIP consistently overestimate Mobile Oil OOIP when the estimates are made from petrophysical logs or solvent-extraction or high-temperature extraction. Inaccurate recovery estimates based on inflated Mobile Oil OOIP adversely impact completion design and well spacing decisions. Our new LTHP mobile vs. total oil methodology resolves this problem and allows for identification of which zones are suitable for depletion drive and which are best for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) strategies. The example in this figure is discussed in a recent paper we published. In unconventional reservoirs, production allocation can greatly improve operators’ understanding of well performance when integrated with reservoir characterization and in-reservoir P/T monitoring. Production monitoring allows operators to predict total recovery, assess well interference, delineate drained rock volume, and diagnose mechanical issues. Reconciliation of produced gas and oil allocations can identify low-liquid-yield zones and the full extent of gas production.
