Sarpy County is honoring law enforcement officers for their selfless work keeping our community safe. The Board of Commissioners on Tuesday proclaimed this week, May 12-18, 2024, as National Police Week in Sarpy County in recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of our local law enforcement personnel. More than 214 men and women serve the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, including 109 sworn officers. These public servants take on great risk to their personal safety in the performance of their duties, often putting themselves in harm’s way. Established nationally by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, this week serves as a time to also pay special tribute to the law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in service to their communities. The partnered with the the City of Bellevue and the last year to honor the memory of hometown hero James Matthew Muhlbauer, a police officer who died in the line of duty on February 15, 2023, after a vehicle crashed into his cruiser. Muhlbauer, a graduate of Bryan High School, served the Kansas City Police Department. A street sign in a northwest Bellevue neighborhood honors his memory and his police service dog, who was also killed in the incident. Muhlbauer's story is an important reminder of the risk our first responders take each time they put on their uniforms. Sarpy County encourages our community to take time at any opportunity, but especially this week, to thank local law enforcement for their professionalism, courage and compassion in service to our safety. https://lnkd.in/ej_gHiwE
