Upskilling is a team effort, which is why I’m so glad to announce a new partnership between OneRange and Plum. Plum uses science-backed data to measure and match human potential to job needs and provide personalized career insights, while improving quality of hire and creating high-performing teams. Read the announcement on our Blog and check out Plum’s newest product releases, PlumFlourish and PlumThrive. We’ve built some great partnerships with HR tech innovators, and I’m excited to dive into this area of talent and performance management with Plum. We’re really impressed with the science behind every product Plum develops, and eager to see how we can collaborate in some pretty interesting ways. Ultimately, it’s all about ensuring that upskilling is integrated into every part of the employee lifecycle and tied directly to career development and performance. For example, imagine an employee who uses PlumFlourish’s psychometric assessments to identify the unique superpowers that make them most effective for specific roles, and then seamlessly connects to OneRange to further hone those skills and accrue credentials that make them even more attractive to potential employers. This is the kind of innovation we’re imagining as we think about the future of upskilling. A huge thanks to CEO Caitlin MacGregor, Gregg Moran, and the entire Plum team, for making this great collaboration happen. I’d love to hear your thoughts, or any other recommendations for amazing companies we should know about. https://lnkd.in/eWmvjAi7 #upskilling #learninganddevelopment #HRtech

Coming off of one of our most successful conferences ever at SHRM Annual in Chicago last week. Huge thanks to the SHRMLabs team (Andy Biladeau, Hadeel Al-Tashi, and Nell Hellem) for the invitation and all their support to make it such a great event!! A few of our top highlights, in no particular order: Keynote featuring Booz Allen Hamilton’s Chief People Officer Betty Thompson and journalist Al Roker, in which they cited upskilling as the TOP PRIORITY for HR leaders. We always love when people who don’t live and breathe upskilling every day the way we do give it a shout-out in such a major forum. Woohoo!! Great parties with SHRMLabs and SHRM Enterprise Solutions, including stunning views of the can’t-beat Chicago skyline, awesome bands, and fun opportunities to network with other SHRMLabs portfolio companies All the interesting (and super helpful) one-on-one conversations we had with folks who visited our booth. Here are some of the topics that came up in these convos: The challenges of assessing the skills of the current workforce - The limitations of many existing Learning Management Systems, including low utilization and low engagement - The realization among executives of the need to shift from compliance-driven approaches to more meaningful upskilling - The challenge of knowing where to start with upskilling Booth shots: Steve, Houtan Fanisalek (Hoots), and Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, CEO and President of SHRM. Thanks to Johnny (or Mr. Taylor depending on your comfort level) and everyone else for spending time with us! #SHRM24 #HR #HRTECH #HRinnovation #shrmlabs #upskilling

¡Sí se puede! Since 2020, language learning has been on the rise. A few stats to help demonstrate the trend: --According to Global Market Insights, the language learning market was -valued at $61.5B in 2023 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of over 20% from 2024 to 2032 --Monthly active users of DuoLingo, one of the most popular language learning apps, have grown from 37M in 2020 to nearly 100M in 2024 (Statista) --Babbel, another popular language learning app, has seen a 50% YOY growth for their Babbel for Business product globally (Worklife) So why is language learning so “en vogue” at the moment? The tide of globalization and neoliberalism has helped to boost language learning since at least the late 20th century, as corporate workforces and supply chains have become increasingly distributed across geographies. But the trend of language learning – both for work and pleasure – exploded after 2020 due to a few key additional factors. 1) First, the growth of affordable, smartphone-based learning apps, many of which use a Freemium model (such as DuoLingo) 2) Second, the growing trend of remote work – including international remote work – that accelerated dramatically during the pandemic and has continued ever since 3) Third, the pent up desire for leisure-based travel that led to a huge boom in international trips once pandemic-era travel restrictions were lifted 4) And finally, the growth of AI technology, which has enabled language learning apps to rapidly improve the quality of their product and deliver more individualized learning to users at scale. Have you been a part of the massive language learning upskilling boom? If so, which languages are you learning, and what tools are you using to help? Has developing language skills helped you in your career or personal life? https://lnkd.in/eymTvbms https://lnkd.in/eZ5_Pm3H. https://lnkd.in/exSUHT-6

Interesting article: According to McKinsey, both a “skills tsunami” and a “silver tsunami” are “on the horizon.” Gotta love a catchy headline that includes some newly coined terms. But aren’t these phenomena already here? We would argue they are. The meaning of the skills tsunami is pretty obvious, and something we talk about all the time at OneRange: the massive shift in capabilities that employees need to keep up with rapidly changing technology and evolving workplaces. This applies to both tech workers and those in many other industries, such as skilled trades. McKinsey’s own research estimates that there’s a skills mismatch costing US companies $5B – adding to our argument that these changes are not “”on the horizon,” but here today. The “silver tsunami” refers to Baby Boomers – the largest current generation – retiring and taking a lifetime of hard-earned skills with them. Given that 60% of baby boomers are already retired, we’d say this trend has pretty much arrived. When you think about it – and the article doesn’t really go into depth in its analysis here – it’s a pretty interesting interplay between very different types of skills. On the one hand, you have the need to acquire totally new skills necessitated by the advent  of new technology such as AI. For example, MckInsey’s research shows that nearly two-thirds of companies are already using generative AI regularly—double the percentage that said the same 10 months ago. On the other hand, you have the institutional and industrial knowledge, management, and other skills held by already retired or soon-to-be-retired Baby Boomers. Developing these skills in a new generation of workers will require different types of approaches to upskilling. For example, bootcamps and certificates from third party providers may be best to support the acquisition of new technology skills, while mentorship, coaching, and knowledge documentation through a corporate intranet may be the best way to ensure the transition of knowledge and skills acquired by older workers. While we started with a focus on curating upskilling content from external providers at OneRange, we have since broadened our platform to enable more internal training and intranet-like activities, which we think is a critical piece of the upskilling puzzle. Curious to know what you think. Are the “skills tsunami” and “silver tsunami” on the horizon, or already here? How is your company approaching these trends (if they are), and what are you doing about it as an individual? https://lnkd.in/eYajtByw

Both a ‘skills tsunami’ and a ‘silver tsunami’ are set to hit the workforce at the same time, McKinsey says.
