In a state where almost half a million residents live under the poverty line, New Mexico Legal Aid strives to maintain a high level of service to promote family and economic stability. For every 14,000 poor persons, there is one legal aid attorney at NMLA. We dedicate our work to individuals and families who have depleted resources for basic human needs, ultimately securing safe housing, food, income, and personal safety. We are proud and grateful for the opportunities to work alongside our colleagues and community partners to help alleviate poverty in New Mexico. (NMLA) is to be the voice, defender, and advocate for poor people who are seeking justice in all forums, particularly in the communities in which they live. NMLA is committed to helping poor people in their struggle to access food, shelter, security, and to preserve their unique cultural heritages. What Is Legal Aid? Legal aid programs help people who live in households with annual incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. Clients represent every ethnic and age group and live in rural, suburban, and urban areas. They are the working poor, veterans, families with children, farmers and migrant workers, people with disabilities, homeowners, renters, and the elderly. Legal assistance is necessary for addressing many issues that affect low-income individuals and families, including: Access to Benefits Consumer Rights Employment and Income Maintenance Family Law and Domestic Violence Landlord/ Tenant and other housing issues

    New Mexico Legal Aid is hiring a Director of our statewide Volunteer Attorney Program. This position requires close work with the Pro Bono Committees of the various Judicial Districts, the State Bar of New Mexico and the New Mexico Commission on Access to Justice. The candidate must know how to plan, execute, oversee and evaluate a successful program to deliver volunteer legal services, both through clinics and individual direct assignments. NMLA, the State Bar and the Commission on Access to Justice are committed to building and maintaining one of the most successful and innovative pro bono projects in the country. The Volunteer Attorney Program Director will work closely with the NMLA Executive Director and Director of Litigation, State Bar leaders, Courts, local Judicial District pro bono committees, individual private attorneys and law firms, law school faculty and student groups, and civil legal services partner agencies throughout the state to achieve maximum potential of pro bono initiatives for providing representation and other forms of legal assistance to low-income New Mexicans.     NMLA is hiring a dedicated DEI and Human Resources specialist to contribute to and support an inclusive organizational culture that centers on racial, LGBTQ+, social, and disability equity. This position will play a pivotal role in supporting our DEI initiatives for helping the organization to apply an equity lens to both NMLA's internal dynamics as well as our community-facing work, and additionally, to provide support for other HR Functions. The DEI - HR Specialist will report directly to the Human Resources Director in the Albuquerque office. The job responsibilities outlined encompass various areas focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Equitable Outreach, Ensuring Access to Services, and Human Resources Support. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Develop and implement strategies and programs related to DEI. Conducting intakes. Communicating successfully and respectfully with clients by any available verbal or written means. Collection of client data. Drafting correspondence and preparing other written materials.   For the Albuquerque office, the Legal Secretary will be responsible for:   Serving as receptionist for phone and in-person contacts with office.   Conducting intakes. Assisting with drafting, editing and managing correspondence, case documents and administrative documents. Assisting with scheduling and calendar management for staff. Assisting staff with organizing and maintaining administrative resources and client files.  General filing and clerical support. Maintains notary license and fulfills office notary requirements.   Requirements:  Three (3) or more years of legal secretary experience; Understands local and state court rules and procedures including service of summons, deadlines, filing papers, certificate of service etc; The ability to manage multiple tasks and build collaborative relationships within the staff; ·Able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, to effectively collaborate and co-counsel with staff located in multiple offices. Familiarity with Office365 is a plus. Excellent organizational and written communication skills. Maintenance of office files and records. Abilities include calendaring.     New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) is hiring a Grants Assistant to work in collaboration with NMLA's Director of Grants Administration and provide support necessary for the submission, administration, and reporting of contracts and grants that fund our programs.   NMLA has numerous contracts and grants at varying funding levels from local and national organizations including private foundations and local, state, and federal government agencies. NMLA's multiple funding sources require data collection/management, a high volume of grant reporting, and complex systems of tracking and monitoring funding compliance requirements. The Grants Assistant will provide multiple levels of support to the Director of Grants Administration to ensure that grants are tracked, and all reports are timely submitted.   ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:   • Work with the Director of Grants Administration to draft and submit grant reports. • Assist the Director of Grants Administration in drafting and submitting grant proposals. • Maintain a master calendar for grant deadlines, including grant reporting and other grant deliverables. • Become proficient in the use of NMLA's case management system (LegalServer) and assist in accurately tracking and reporting case and client data. • Work with staff concerning questions on the requirements and processes for correctly entering client and case data in NMLA's online case management system to comply with grant requirements. Help to prepare instructions regarding the requirements and processes for correctly entering data in NMLA's online case management system. • Provide members of administration and management with information, reports, and other data needed for grant compliance and reporting purposes. • Become familiar with Legal Services Corporation regulations and restrictions and New Mexico Legal Aid Board policies and procedures and their applicability to grants management and data analysis tasks. • Assist the Director of Grants Administration in program evaluation, including development of and tracking survey results. • Offer recommendations about improvement of processes related to grant management.     New Mexico Legal Aid is hiring a paralegal to support its Statewide Housing Stability and its Veteran’s Project. The paralegal will assist attorneys serving eligible clients threatened with loss of their housing and/or housing subsidies, as well as eligible US Armed Services Veterans seeking to get or increase their benefits. There will also be opportunities to assist with statewide clinics and outreach. Responsibilities will be statewide. Due to the range of service areas, this position may be housed in any of NMLA's statewide office locations, but there is a preference for the Albuquerque office in order to work closely with the Statewide Housing Stability Manager and the Housing and Veteran’s Attorneys. For this position, the Paralegal, under the direction of the Housing Managing Attorney, will assist the Attorneys with: Litigation support Eviction prevention Habitability Reasonable accommodations Subsidized housing Low-Income housing tax credit Designing statewide clinics and outreach programs Other housing-related work The Paralegal will also assist the Veteran’s Project Staff Attorney with: Preparing and filing appeals to the VA regarding discharge status, benefits ratings, etc. Assisting Veterans with other legal issues including: housing, family law, and consumer law The duties of the Housing Stability and Veteran’s Project Paralegal will be to: Process intakes Draft pleadings Contact clients Support attorneys in preparation for court Send referrals to other support service agencies Engage in outreach Arrange and assist with legal clinics Requirements: Have at least three years' experience as a Paralegal. The Safe to Be You project provides legal assistance to LGBTQ+ people who have experienced discrimination and or violence because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. This project offers services statewide. For this position, under the supervision of the managing attorney, the Paralegal will be responsible for litigation support and assistance to victim's rights attorneys, direct advocacy and victims. The paralegal duties will include: Processing intakes. General support to attorneys in preparation for court. Litigation support. Drafting pleadings, correspondence and preparation of other written materials. Communicating successfully and respectfully with clients. Sending referrals to other support service agencies. Engaging in outreach. Providing/arranging training to victims' rights advocates. Collection of client data. Maintaining client information in a database. May be required to: Attend court with clients. Assist them with obtaining financial aid. Monitor cases for victim's rights violations requiring attorney involvement. Requirements / Qualifications: Experience as a Paralegal is preferred but will consider exceptionally well-qualified entry-level candidates. Experience as a victim advocate and/or victim advocate certification strongly preferred. Highly organized. Familiar with electronic document tracking and must be able to effectively use computer technology, including Microsoft products and remote communications systems, including shared online workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, and to collaborate with staff located in multiple offices.     New Mexico Legal Aid is hiring a staff attorney for our Statewide Intake, Referral & Advice (IRA) Unit. New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low income New Mexicans for a variety of legal issues including domestic violence/family law, consumer protection, housing, and benefits. NMLA has locations throughout the state. For this position, the staff attorney will be interviewing applicants on substantive legal issues, providing legal information and advice, referrals, and brief services such as reviewing legal documents, helping clients fill out legal forms and write simple letters, providing brief advocacy calls on behalf of clients and providing guidance for pro se clients who need help to prepare for a pro se court appearance or strategize the next step in a self-help legal matter. An IRA Attorney may also be asked to provide initial pleadings or other documents in emergency cases. If appropriate, the Intake Attorney will also prepare the client case to be transferred for extended services by an NMLA practice group or specialty unit. Referrals may also be made to NMLA's statewide Volunteer Attorney Program. This position can be housed in any of the NMLA offices located throughout New Mexico. Work from home options are available during COVID and the office recognizes the importance of COVID safety measures.
