Let’s #TalkAboutSudan. Despite being looted and out of service in the early weeks of the war, the MSF-supported El Geneina Teaching Hospital has remained the main hospital in West Darfur, providing lifesaving medical care free of charge to vulnerable people, including women and children. The health care system around it has completely collapsed. However, the increasing humanitarian and medical needs in the entire state are being met with insufficient international attention. This was an extremely difficult decision for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders to make. After being subjected to harassment and threats of arrest, all MSF staff have been evacuated from the Turkish Hospital in Khartoum, #Sudan. And while the facility will remain open, surgery will no longer be possible without our team.   All of the dedicated health workers have been providing life-saving care non-stop for the past 10 months under extremely challenging circumstances. It’s horrifying that attacks on medical facilities and medical workers keep happening. We continue to call on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to guarantee the safety of medical personnel, and grant the necessary travel permits for our staff and supplies.    https://lnkd.in/dbtatMTt

According to the United Nations, about 90 percent of Gazans have been displaced at least once since October 2023.  Haider* is an MSF watchman who was a part of our team at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City during the bombardments between October and November 2023. Since the war began, he’s been forcibly displaced eight times—an average of once a month. Meet Margot. She helps care for survivors when they first come on board MSF’s Geo Barents search and rescue vessel. In addition to offering medical and psychological care, we distribute welcome kits filled with critical supplies, including clothes and snacks.  

Psychological first aid is a vital mental health component of our team’s emergency response after a traumatic event. We know that mental health support is not always prioritized after a traumatic event—even though it is essential to helping people recover and rebuild their lives. According to World Health Organization, 1 in 5 people who have experienced war or other conflict in the past 10 years will have depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. In Sudan, more than 8.6 million people have been displaced by the current conflict, creating one of the largest displacement crises in the world.   Fighting between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces has only intensified since April 2023, leaving displaced people sheltering in Hasahisa camp in Zalingei caught in the crossfire.  The camp once housed close to 50,000 people but eventually emptied as people fled to escape bombings. With so few alternatives, people have been sheltering in looted and abandoned schools, banks, fire stations, and other camps across the city for months. Love without borders❤️ No one should ever be denied access to medical and mental health care simply because of who they are or who they love. Inclusive care saves lives. 

Meet Julie Papango. As a transgender woman from the Philippines, she’s not able to legally change the “M” gender marker on her passport.   In 2009, Julie was traveling overseas for the first time on her way to her first assignment as a clinical laboratory scientist with MSF.
