Founded in 2012 by Vicki Hayes, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, and Shelly Chipman, MSN, RN, CSHE, Simulation Clinical Educator, Doc4aDay is a pipeline activity supported by medical student volunteers from Maine Track, which is a collaboration between MaineHealth and Tufts. Thirty-one high school students from Portland and Deering high schools participated with 16 medical student mentors last year. Care Team Member Spotlight! Rachel, Medical Assistant II – Vascular Surgery “I started working for MaineHealth in 2020 as a new grad Medical Assistant at Surgical Care. When starting that role, I was introduced to complex wounds. This sparked my interest in learning about the various types of wounds, wound care products, and how wounds develop and heal. I soon learned that a key part to wound healing is good blood flow. Without the adequate blood supply to promote healing, the area of concern will not progress in the direction that is needed. That is when I learned about MaineHealth Vascular Surgery and I instantly applied.” “I have now been a part of Vascular Surgery for close to 2 years and have been loving it ever since! I have further developed my wound care skills and knowledge with the assistance of our providers and expert surgeons. Once a week, our lead physician assistant and a surgeon, host an educational session on our complex vascular diseases. Providing education on how these diseases begin, how they are treated, and even video footage of surgical interventions, I have gained tremendous knowledge of the vascular component to life. With the continuing education provided, we have opened the door to achieve a better relationship with our patients by providing them with a true understanding of their disease.” Our care team is truly a great team! Everyone here is willing to jump in to help when needed, participate in various committees, strengthen our compliance standards, and just simply having fun with each other. Over the last couple years, we have developed a strong bond between departments. Our clinical and scheduling teams have always had open communication with each other, so our patients receive top notch care. By being able to learn each individual role of the practice, establishing a better foundation to patient care, I’m able to help patients from start to finish of their visits. I am thankful for the opportunity that Vascular Surgery has given me. With the support from my manager and leadership, I have been able to successfully return to school to further my professional career with nursing. MaineHealth as a whole has been supportive as well with their amazing tuition assistance program. I’m truly grateful to be part of an organization that supports my education both at home and work!” Rachel – thank you so much for taking the time to share your career journey with us. It’s exciting to hear about your continued professional development as a caregiver and we wish you the best of luck in nursing school! Your dedication to patient-centered care is admirable and so appreciated. The MaineHealth Vascular Surgery team is hiring! Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates Federal troops arriving in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865 to announce the end of the Civil War and to enforce the freedom of enslaved African-Americans. This occurred a full two and a half years after issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln. Today, Juneteenth is often celebrated with loved ones or community members gathering at cookouts to emphasize togetherness, shared history and culture, rest, and the right to freely assemble. Essentially, Juneteenth is Black Independence Day, a celebration of life, love, and liberty. #Juneteenth
