Due to her passion for helping others, Jamie Hancock is our June 2024 Volunteer Champion! Jamie is always looking for ways to support FundPlay Foundation partners and their work. She’s an OG member of the FundPlay Foundation Advisory Board and has been supporting FundPlay Foundation since she joined LeagueApps. Recently, Jamie has started captaining a consulting project with FundPlay partner, Harold Hunter Foundation, focusing on Marketing and Event Planning. She’s organized two high-impact meetings with their Executive Director and members of their team and board. We are so excited to see how this project will positively impact Harold Hunter Foundation, and lay the foundation to similarly support other grantees! At LeagueApps, we want to do everything we can to give youth sports leaders the tools to create spaces where every kid can thrive through sports. When a young LGBTQ+ person sees members of the community thriving—whether its in the sport they're playing, on TV, or in other fields that they wish to one day be successful in—they can envision themselves having the same success and happiness. A great way to make the LGBTQ players on your team feel represented and seen is by talking about openly queer professional athletes. Today is Juneteenth—which marks the day in 1865 when news of the freedom of enslaved African Americans in the United States reached those in Texas. In other words, Juneteenth is the day the slaves were actually freed in the US.  Yet, it is a reminder of this country’s ongoing journey toward racial equality and justice—so we wanted to make a quick guide for you to celebrate with your teams this year. Here are 3 ways you and your youth sports teams can celebrate Juneteenth 2024. 

Maryland SoccerPlex stepped in when Montgomery County needed them most 🦸 The county didn't have enough field space, so they partnered up to create a nonprofit that operates on public park space—resulting in a youth sports facility that has 24 outdoor fields and a 60,000 square foot Field House. Because they operate on public property, visitors often think Maryland SoccerPlex is a public park... and the county sometimes gets credit for a lot of their hard work 😅 Matt Libber, STS says he doesn't mind, though—because "it just means they're doing good work."

Peter Gardner is no stranger to championing underserved youth in NYC. His passion for sport and volunteerism lead him to captain LeagueApps’ first Major League Baseball (MLB) Pitch Hit and Run event during FundPlay Day - all within his first few months on our FundPlay Foundation Advisory Board. Peter is a long time volunteer with Lower East Side nonprofit Grand Street Settlement; he even organized a charity basketball tournament for them this year, through the support of LeagueApps technology.
