Get ready for some adorable traffic disruption this week! 🐐 Our team of diligent goats is currently on the move from building 48-building 37 to the old cafeteria site. Keep an eye out the morning of Thursday, July 11, as they journey from our Blackberry gate to below Building 88 to continue their fire mitigation work. We're not kidding! #GoatSquad #FirePrevention

About us
Founded in 1931 on the belief that the biggest scientific challenges are best addressed by teams, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and its scientists have been recognized with 16 Nobel Prizes (lbl.gov/people/excellence/nobelists/). Today, Berkeley Lab researchers develop sustainable energy and environmental solutions, create useful new materials, advance the frontiers of computing, and probe the mysteries of life, matter, and the universe. Scientists from around the world rely on the Lab’s facilities for their own discovery science. Berkeley Lab is a multiprogram national laboratory, managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

👨🔬 ♻️ 🌎 A recent collaborative study with Berkeley Lab scientists found that plants across the world are more productive than previously thought. But if they absorb carbon faster than expected, this means they also release carbon faster than expected, changing scientists understanding how much carbon plants store. "...Carbon cycles more rapidly between the atmosphere and biosphere than we thought. We need to better understand and account for this more rapid cycling in climate models.” - Berkeley Lab scientist Charles Koven in a recent Earth.Com article. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4eVoSUo

New DNA Surface Passivation #Innovation with PMMA Brush Monolayers! Machines that work at the interface of biology and electronics are the future of nanotechnological innovations in biotechnology. Surface passivation is crucial in biotechnology to prevent nonspecific adsorption of biomolecules. Our researchers at Berkeley Lab have developed an innovative solution: poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes. These brushes form a protective monolayer that prevents unwanted DNA binding/interactions through a simple spin coat-anneal-rinse procedure. Particularly useful in #DNAnanotechnology, PMMA brushes ensure precise and selective placement of nucleic acid structures. Key Benefits: • Chemically and thermally stable • Various functional end groups • Highly adaptable to different surfaces • Easy to implement Shoutout to our dedicated researchers at Berkeley Lab: Beihang Yu Ronald Zuckermann Michael Connolly Ricardo Ruiz Grigory Tikhomirov Paul Ashby This technology is now available for licensing or collaborative development. #Biotechnology #SurfacePassivation #Collaboration #FutureTech #DNAnanotech #DNAelectronics

In a world striving for sustainability, understanding roots—the dynamic interface between plant and soil—is crucial. To that end, Berkeley Lab scientists from the Applied Mathematics and Computational Research (AMCR) and #BioEGSB Divisions developed RhizoNet, which harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to automate the process of root image analysis with exceptional accuracy. This pioneering tool transforms the study of plant roots, offering new insights into root behavior under various environmental conditions. https://lnkd.in/ggK2xJwq

Our Lab employees, along with family and friends, celebrated diversity and love at the 54th Annual #SFPride Parade this past Sunday, themed #BeaconOfLove, or as we like to say, #BeakersOfLove 😉. Thank you to all who participated in making our annual march a huge success! 🏳️🌈
