Just some more "boring" tunnel projects by Kiewit.

Congratulations to Weeks Marine, Inc., a subsidiary of Kiewit, for completing the Ponte Vedra Beach Restoration Project ahead of schedule! The project team placed two million cubic yards of sand along nine miles of the Ponte Vedra Beach shoreline — restoring storm-damaged dunes and berms and providing storm protection to upland infrastructure. This effort also provided more environmental habitats for wildlife and a better experience for visitors.

If you ask Del Shannon what his favorite things are, he would probably say his 1953 F-100 Ford truck, playing soccer and talking about dams. As the chief dam engineer, Del joined Kiewit in 2022 to lead the newly formed hydropower, dams and hydraulic structures (HDH) group. His team will soon help support Kiewit's first design-build dam project for a new dam in South Carolina. Over the last few years, Del has had some exciting experiences — from being invited to speak at an international dam and water symposium in South Korea to sharing his knowledge on water scarcity with the Presidential-appointed National Infrastructure Advisory Council. Del appreciates Kiewit's support of his team and all of the initiatives he's been pursuing on behalf of the company. "The ability to provide input and help influence key decisions as they relate to hydropower, dams and hydraulic structures is tremendous and Kiewit is always an ongoing supporter of my efforts on these topics." Recently, Del was named one of the world's most influential people in hydropower by International Water Power & Dam Construction Magazine — a recognition he wasn’t expecting. "The people included on this list are the brightest minds of our industry working quietly and diligently to help improve some of the most basic needs of our society: water and power. To be a member of this group is tremendously satisfying and an extreme source of pride, as it reinforces the importance of the work we are all doing on behalf of humanity." What's next for Del? He'll be traveling to Ethiopia this summer to help develop a dam safety strategy program under the Nile Basin Initiative, supporting ten countries. Keep up the great work, Del!

Next time you visit Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, you will want to see the immersive Hubbard Orangutan Forest! This three-acre exhibit has been inspired by Southeast Asia — giving visitors a first-hand look into the lives of five orangutans and their siamang cousins in their natural habitat. When visitors walk in, they have unobstructed views of the orangutans and can visit the educational spaces for an interactive experience. We were proud to build this new space for the animals and to add another great exhibit for the 2024 Best Zoo in the country!

The team on the Bend North Corridor Design-Build Project has reached an important milestone in helping realign one of the most congested portions of U.S. 97 in Bend, Oregon, and improve a section of U.S. 20. All bridge decks have been placed on the new U.S. 97 on-ramp, and we now have a visual of how the area will look with traffic. Our team has been working on constructing new pedestrian crossings and sidewalks, upgrading bike lanes, adding a new transit stop and creating roundabouts. Because of population growth and both highways being used as primary routes for residents, traffic has significantly increased in the area. Our improvements will help provide traffic congestion relief, improve local and highway traffic safety, reduce traffic volume and speeds, increase freight mobility and improve travel times. Construction is expected to wrap up in December.
