Our 2023 Mission Report is officially live, and spoiler alert...we’ve been busy.  Beautycounter’s Mission Report is an annual recap of the progress we made leading the clean beauty movement, together. Every year is a step forward from the last, bringing us closer to a future where all beauty is good for you and the planet.  In 2023 we helped pass four health-protective cosmetic laws (the most for us in one year), expanded The Never List® to over 2,800 harmful or questionable ingredients, leveraged post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic in over 85% of the products we launched, and more. After a decade of advocacy, extensive research and development, Beautycounter is proud to introduce an industry-leading clean fragrance line. For over 10 years, we have focused on closing what is known as the “fragrance loophole” a legal provision dating back to the 1970s that allows companies to legally hide dozens to hundreds of ingredients used to make a scent under generic listings such as “fragrance” or “parfum.” This current industry practice prevents consumers from being informed about what they’re putting on their bodies, while research continues to show the presence of potentially harmful ingredients in traditional fragrance/parfums including known allergens, endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, skin irritants, and ingredients toxic to the reproductive system.  Using Beautycounter’s unique approach to formulation — which extends far beyond simply banning a few ingredients deemed “bad” by retailers—Beautycounter formulated the collection with:  - Unparalleled safety screening, leveraging their world class team of safety scientists who reviewed each ingredient across 23 health and environmental endpoints, an uncommon practice in the industry. - Complete ingredient transparency, showcasing long ingredient lists to guide consumer decisions. - Third-party validation, all five scents are Environmental Working Group VERIFIED®, Leaping Bunny Program certified, and tested to be safe for sensitive skin. This is a milestone; but our work isn’t done. We will continue to ask Congress to close the fragrance loophole and won’t stop until transparency is the industry standard. Learn more about the fragrance loophole and why ingredient transparency matters by watching and sharing the video below. https://lnkd.in/gX9USNeh

Beautycounter was proud to present “Beauty Justice at the Intersection of Corporate Leadership and Regulation” at the Society of Toxicology (SOT) Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City last week. Beautycounter Senior Scientist, Mary Ruhter, discussed the scientific research underpinning the need for action and what Beautycounter is doing to advance beauty justice, including driving support for the federal Cosmetic Safety Protections for Communities of Color and Professional Salon Workers Act. Beautycounter remains committed to working with associations and industry partners as we advance our mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone. We spent 10 years advocating to help pass MoCRA—the first major update to federal cosmetics laws in over 84 years. Over the weekend $7 million was appropriated to FDA to support proper implementation of the cosmetics safety law. This first-ever funding by Congress resources FDA to staff and support key provisions of the law which includes mandatory recalls for bad actors in the beauty industry; studying problematic ingredients like PFAS and talc; and so much more. Passing laws is laborious work, but only half the battle. Beautycounter is here to support proper implementation of cosmetics regulatory reforms, and rest assured we’re continuing to fight for policies that still need to be passed: closing the fragrance loophole, banning the worst offenders, and protecting over exposed communities.
