“It's not always about taking risks. Successful entrepreneurs are actually great at mitigating them. Test and learn.” Director of Marketing & Communications, Vondell J. Burns and the Atento Capital Team attended the BBG Ventures' Annual General Meeting. The AGM was an opportunity to learn about the insights shaping the venture capital industry. Director of Marketing & Communications @ Atento Capital | Transforming Ideas to Reality

This week, the Atento Capital team hit the Big Apple (NYC) to attend BBG Ventures' Annual General Meeting. BBG Ventures is an early-stage, generalist fund focused on startups with a female or diverse founder. This was my first time traveling for an AGM, and I wanted to share some insights and takeaways that stood out to me: Investors had a lot to say about sought-after founder qualities and here are some common ones that stood out: 💡 Curiosity: Always seeking to learn and explore. 🙏 Humility: Staying grounded and open to feedback. 📖 Continuous Learning: Continuously evolving and improving. 🏅 Coachability: Willingness to take advice and grow. 💪 Scrappiness: Resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges. Investors were leaned in on the latest trends: - Thematic Research-driven funds are becoming more prevalent. - Market exits have been quiet, leading to larger portfolios to manage. - Despite market corrections, the most resilient founders remain, demonstrating their ability to adapt and thrive. - Higher quality companies have adjusted their burn rates and are actively raising funds this year. Some common advice founders get is to build relationships with investors BEFORE a raise so investors gave some tips on how to navigate those convos: 1. Only engage with a few LPs (2-4) who have a specific interest in your project. 2. Be prepared to share numbers and keep the meeting focused. 3. Know when to start raising by setting milestones and be comfortable saying “no” to meetings until then. Some of my favorite quotables: - “If the founders can’t sell it, no one else will be able to sell it.” - “It's not always about taking risks. Successful entrepreneurs are actually great at mitigating them. Test and learn.” - "Our team took the first 6 months of the year to upskill in #AI, reflecting its growing importance in the industry." These insights underscore the dynamic and evolving nature of the #VentureCapital landscape. It's crucial to stay adaptable, continuously learn, and strategically navigate the market. Huge congratulations to Nisha Dua and Susan Lyne for leading the charge on such an impactful summit. We got to hear from the likes of Beatrice Dixon (excited to get you to Tulsa), Neil Blumenthal, Charles Hudson (excellent moderator), James Joaquin, Martha Stewart and more! I even got to reconnect with my old friend Holyn K. and laugh at how we both ended up in VC. I would be remiss without acknowledging the incredible work done by Drew Silverman on putting together the summit. Event planning is no small feat and the icing on the cake was the thoughtful swag bag featuring products from the female founders in the portfolio. You really left no stone unturned. Excited to continue to collaborate on future change making programming. #BeAtento #BBGAGM2024 #Summit

We recently had the honor of co-hosting the Third Sphere Climate Summit, a vibrant gathering of founders and investors from across the country who share a passion for reshaping the venture capital landscape in Tulsa and beyond. The Third Sphere Climate Summit was an opportunity for industry leaders from across the country to collaborate in the Heartland. We aimed to explore the exciting possibilities that lie at the intersection of technology, venture capital, and climate solutions. One of the highlights was the immersive AI workshop led by Stonly Blue and Helena Merk. Attendees had the opportunity to cultivate new technology skills, taking their LLM prompts to the next level. This immersive experience equipped participants with practical knowledge to navigate the evolving AI landscape. The three-day summit was more than just workshops—it was a platform where pivotal discussions unfolded, sparking ideas and paving the way for transformative solutions. Notably, one of the pivotal discussions was ignited when our portfolio company, Bioeutectics’ founder Tomas Silicaro, took the main stage to explain how their green solvent is disrupting the industry. As the summit concluded, we ventured into the historic Greenwood District where we visited the Greenwood Rising museum and heard from Tulsan business owner, Kode Ransom, on the history of Black Wall Street. This visit underpinned conversations around climate justice and the work we are doing to act as change agents in the space through the investments that we make. A heartfelt thank you to our speakers and participants for making this event memorable! A huge thank you to Shaun Abrahamson, Stonly Blue, Shilpi Kumar, Miela Mayer, Ryan Jones, and the entire Third Sphere Team for co-hosting this summit with Will Gray, CFA Vondell J. Burns, and the entire Atento Capital Team. Your efforts made this summit a resounding success. #ThirdSphereClimateSummit #ThirdSphere #VC #BeAtento

We are happy we got to host the Lightship Foundation founders alongside the HBCUvc Fellows, and our Summer 2024 Atenterns a few weeks ago. As we reflect on the happy hour we hosted, it's clear that these moments of connection are invaluable. Networking in venture capital isn't just about business—it's about building relationships and fostering a supportive community that drives innovation and success. Last week we had the pleasure of hosting the HBCUvc 2024 New Fellows Retreat! During this retreat, our CEO, Michael Basch, delivered an insightful discourse on “How VCs evaluate Business,” offering the fellows valuable guidance as they continue their careers in venture capital. This thought leadership segment exemplified our commitment to unlocking unsung potential, as we believe in the power that emerging leaders have to drive innovation and change. In addition to Michael’s presentation, we actively participated in the HBCUvc capstone presentations. Atento Capital investor, Lauren Roberts served as a panel judge, offering invaluable feedback on sourcing deals, conducting due diligence and evaluating potential investments. Furthermore, one of our portfolio founders, Venita S. Cooper, joined a roundtable discussion on “Trailblazing in Tulsa.” We are proud to have had the opportunity to support the development of future leaders at this year’s HBCUvc New Fellows Retreat. Special thanks to our own Vondell J. Burns and the entire Atento Capital marketing team who collaborated with HBCUvc team members Chelsea Roberts, Chelsea Burwell-Brooks Cynthia Dixon, and Trevor Thomas-Uribe to make this event a success! Our partnership with HBCUvc allows us to continue investing in underserved communities, and underrepresented founders. We are honored to collaborate with organizations like HBCUvc as we continue to support and inspire the next generation of venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. Together, we aim to create a more inclusive and equitable investment landscape! #HBCUvc #VentureCapital #VC #Tulsa #BeAtento
