AURA enables astronomical discovery and promotes broad engagement in exploring the Universe.
About us
The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is a consortium of 47 US institutions and 3 international affiliates that operates world-class astronomical observatories for the National Science Foundation and NASA. AURA’s role is to establish, nurture, and promote public observatories and facilities that advance innovative astronomical research. In addition, AURA is deeply committed to public and educational outreach, and to diversity throughout the astronomical and scientific workforce. AURA carries out its role through its astronomical facilities. AURA is responsible for the successful management and operation of its three centers: NSF’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab); the National Solar Observatory (NSO); and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI).

We are delighted to announce that NSF NOIRLab astronomer Dr. Stephen Ridgway has been awarded the Fizeau Lifetime Achievement Prize for 2024 for his broad legacy of advancing optical interferometry around the world. Dr. Ridgway's wide-reaching fostering of the technique began with pioneering results in lunar occultations and speckle interferometry, to the advancement of key designs, decisions, and implementations of IRMA, IOTA, CHARA, and the VLTI. Congratulations Steve! Read his acceptance speech below. Credit: NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/S. Ridgway

Peek behind the lens! 🌌 With one telescope high in the Chilean mountains, and another on a towering dormant volcano, the International Gemini Observatory offers some of the world’s most pristine views of the night sky. But observing from these lofty altitudes sometimes means being close to a region of intense geological activity🌋 Check out our latest blog to learn how engineers protect the telescopes’ fragile mirrors from the risk of earthquake damage: https://lnkd.in/ekFMqnAQ #GeminiObservatory #NightSkyViews #EarthquakeProofTelescopes

The word’s largest camera ever built for astronomy and astrophysics has made it to its forever home at Rubin Observatory! The LSST Camera completed a long cross-continental trek from SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory after two decades of work, marking the arrival of Rubin’s last remaining major component in Chile. With this achievement, construction of the NSF-DOE Rubin Observatory is nearing its final stretch! The LSST Camera will be installed on Rubin’s Simonyi Survey Telescope later this year. In early 2025, the car-sized 3200-megapixel camera will begin to #CaptureTheCosmos in exquisite detail for Rubin’s 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time and enable countless scientific discoveries - from within our solar system out to distant galaxies. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/eaFUWYsA . . .
