The Redstone Rocket announces, July 11, 1962, that the Zeus Test Stand, one of Marshall Space Flight Center’s two new static test stands, is nearing completion as instrumentation wiring has commenced. Described as “a 5,000 ton monolith of concrete and reinforced steel,” the test stand was reinforced with 328 tons of 2.25” steel bars and 4,900+ tons of poured concrete. A “massive structure” designed to hold “the raging force of heavy solid propellant motors” the thrust block measured 36-feet high with test pads on the north and south sides. These in turn measured 30 feet wide by 134 feet long and 10 feet thick, with steel bars extending down into the hill with pilings going another 15 feet. The design allowed motors to be tested vertically and horizontally. #TBT

On July 4, 2009, North Korea launches seven short-range ballistic missiles, with a range of 400 km, into the Sea of Japan. This launch, just two days after a test launching four missiles, was a violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874. Sanctions imposed following underground nuclear testing conducted in May. Launched from the port of Wonson, the missiles provided an opportunity to test the missile defense system components based in Japan, Alaska, California, Hawaii, and at sea aboard Navy ships in the Pacific in a real-world environment. #TBT
