Tomorrow, June 19, is a holiday for U.S. Ancestry employees in recognition and celebration of Juneteenth in the United States. The holiday presents an opportunity to uplift and celebrate the extraordinary contributions and accomplishments of the Black community.  In commemoration of the holiday, co-chairs of Black Roots, an Ancestry Employee Resource Group, Stephanie W. and Shimeka Graves, visited Galveston, Texas, to experience in-person the place where 2,000 Union troops arrived and announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. Stephanie and Shimeka have shared their experience in the first in a series of posts, “Real People, Connected to Real Places @ Ancestry.” You can read about it here: https://lnkd.in/g-2M64iN #Juneteenth #WeAreAncestry #ERG

Meet our Employees who are Making History  - Kaleb White, Staff Software Engineer What I do at Ancestry: I play a key role in the designing, engineering, and software development of various Family History projects, including projects where we grouped civil war records to create a comprehensive list of soldiers by company and Ancestry Pro Tools, where we create advanced research tools for our users. What I love about my job: Each day I work on exciting new initiatives to help people understand their ancestry in new ways and find records more easily and with greater context. I get to be on the edge of development. I feel like I am making a meaningful difference in our customer's lives by helping them find relatives, understand where their ancestors came from, and develop a greater sense of identity and purpose. What’s your “Family Thing”: My wife and I like to play board games and have accumulated quite a collection! We like to go on hikes in the summer, but our three-year-old daughter would rather get ice cream or frozen yogurt. #WeAreAncestry #Wearethecurious

I grew up in a small town outside of Charleston, SC. It was a place where the legacy of slavery was all around us. We took school field trips to plantations, toured the downtown historic markets where auctions were held, and played along Charleston Harbor where 40% of the enslaved people were brought into America. This week Ancestry launched ‘Articles of Enslavement’ - a new free collection of pre-1870 newspaper articles that include details on more than 183,000 enslaved people in the United States. Many of their names and lives were hidden before, and now with the power of AI, we can ensure we don’t forget who they were. It was heartbreaking to read these auction ads alongside other newspaper ads for the sale of ships, glassware, and real estate, underscoring how slavery was normalized in everyday life. While this content can be hard to read, it’s an important part of this country’s story, and we’re committed to preserving all parts of history, even the challenging ones.

Today we announced the publication of approximately 38,000 newspaper articles related to enslaved people in the United States from 1788-1867. With details on more than 183,000 enslaved people, the Articles of Enslavement collection offers journalists, academics, and the American public a better understanding of how slavery shaped everyday life - and can help millions of descendants make key discoveries about their family history. In a feature published this morning, Axios wrote: “The collection moves the exploration of family history from theories about having an ancestor who suffered under enslavement to finally finding them and naming them.” Read the full feature here: https://lnkd.in/gFAVi3TX This new free collection is the latest step in Ancestry’s commitment to make culturally significant history that is at risk of being forgotten available to everyone at no cost. Articles of Enslavement also includes resources to help viewers prioritize their mental health when reviewing the collection as many articles contain sensitive content related to the buying and selling of enslaved people that may be distressing or traumatic. You can view the new collection and accompanying resources at no cost here: https://lnkd.in/gVDHyhBV #AncestryforAll #WeAreAncestry
