You're striving for top-notch digital strategy. How do you juggle fresh content and SEO demands effectively?
In the digital realm, your strategy must marry the allure of fresh content with the technical precision of search engine optimization (SEO). It's like cooking a gourmet meal; ingredients must be fresh, but the recipe must be precise to delight the palate. SEO ensures your content is discoverable, while fresh content keeps your audience engaged and coming back for more. To excel, you need to understand how to blend these elements seamlessly.
Before diving into content creation, grasp the essentials of SEO. Keywords are the foundation, as they're what your audience types into search engines. However, keyword stuffing, the practice of overloading content with keywords, is a no-go. Instead, focus on integrating keywords naturally within high-quality, relevant content. Search engines prioritize user experience, so a well-structured website with clear navigation and fast loading times is also crucial.

Strategic content planning is key to keeping your digital presence vibrant. Start with a content calendar that outlines when and what you'll publish. This ensures a steady stream of material that can be prepared in advance, reducing last-minute scrambles. Remember, quality trumps quantity. It's better to publish less frequently with high-value content than to overwhelm your audience with filler material.

One of the biggest pieces of advice I could offer up when considering digital strategy in the context of SEO is to ALWAYS write for the user first, not for the search engine first. I see tons of content writers who make the mistake of getting hung up on how many keywords they've used, whether they've included backlinks, etc. etc. YES, these are crucial for SEO. However, write about what you know to begin with. You know your audience's pain points (if you don't, then go back to square 1 and figure these out). You know how they talk. You know the language the use. You know what they find value in. Once you've written content which is genuinely valuable and engaging, then you can optimise with keywords, backlinks, meta tags etc.
When you've identified your keywords, it's time to weave them into your content. This doesn't mean forcing them where they don't fit, but rather letting them flow naturally within the text. The goal is to inform and engage your readers, not just to rank well in search results. A well-crafted piece that resonates with your audience is more likely to be shared, increasing its reach and SEO value.

To balance fresh content with SEO, start with thorough keyword research, focusing on relevant terms and search intent. Organize content into topic clusters and plan it using a content calendar. Integrate keywords naturally into titles, headings, and body text, while using LSI keywords and optimizing images. Promote content on social media, build backlinks through guest blogging and outreach. Monitor performance, identify opportunities, and update content regularly to maintain relevance and search rankings. Remember, prioritize quality over quantity and focus on creating valuable content that meets your audience's needs.
Technical SEO is about making your site appealing to search engines. This includes optimizing meta tags, such as title tags and meta descriptions, which help search engines understand your content. Ensure your site is mobile-friendly and has an SSL certificate for security. These factors not only boost your search engine rankings but also enhance user trust and satisfaction.

In digital strategy, technical SEO is the backbone that supports your entire online presence, yet many business owners overlook its importance. Ignoring technical aspects like site speed, mobile optimisation, and proper indexing can sabotage even the best content strategies. A real-world example is Amazon, which estimated a few years ago that a one-second delay could cost them $1.6 billion in sales annually. Tools like Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, SEMRush & more can help identify and fix these issues if you're new to technical SEO. It can feel scary if you're new to SEO, but tools like these help significantly, and optimising your site technically can really help you stay ahead of competition long-term.
Diversify your content types to keep your audience engaged. Blogs, videos, infographics, and podcasts can all play a role in your digital strategy. Different formats cater to different preferences, increasing the chances of reaching a wider audience. Additionally, varying your content types can help you cover more keywords and topics, which can improve your SEO.

Many business owners that I speak to mistakenly believe that each piece of content they create must be original, and this mindset can limit potential. Unless your job is in marketing, you likely don't have a ton of time to create (valuable, engaging, scroll-stopping) content all the time. According to a Content Marketing Institute study, nearly 60% of marketers reuse content two to five times to maximise the value of their efforts. This can assist you with creating that variety of content, but with less effort and better use of time. E.g. if you create a podcast - repurpose the transcript to create a blog, numerous 'teaser trailers' for Reels, carousel posts, paid ads, etc.
Finally, use analytics to guide your strategy. Tools like Google Analytics provide valuable data on how users interact with your content. Analyze which pieces perform best and why. This insight allows you to refine your approach, focusing on what works and improving or discarding what doesn't. Continuous improvement is the hallmark of a successful digital strategy.

It is crucial to turn data into actionable strategies. For one of my clients who is a small business owner specializing in handcrafted jewelry, website analytics played a crucial role in optimizing their content strategy. After implementing SEO best practices and high-quality content focused on specific keywords related to their unique jewelry designs, we utilized analytics tools to track user behavior and content performance. Analytics revealed that long-tail keywords like "bohemian silver necklace" and "handmade gemstone earrings" were driving a significant portion of organic traffic. This insight allowed us to tailor future content to target these specific user searches, potentially leading to higher conversion rates.
