In my experience, moving the data to Cloud involves a good planning. There are couple of options to chose from 1. Based on the data size (TB/PB), leverage the data transfer device from the Hyperscaler like AWS offers Snowball/Snowcone, GCP offers Transfer Appliance, etc. 2. Hyperscalers also offer data transfer service for the data in MB/GB The advantage of using an appliance or a data transfer service is "in-built" encryption feature and capability to resume in case of intermittent outage. Alternatively, enterprises can migrate the data in a secure way (using customer owned encryptions keys) over the network connectivity to the Hyperscaler. In order to ensure, no data loss happened in transit, enterprise can also leverage DLP API.

It's very important to identify which data can be moved as-is and which requires additional encryption. This will enable certain data to remain private during migration which is an important aspect of privacy and security

One thing I've found helpful is to backup both before and after migration. This will help compare the current data to the previously backed up data to ensure coherence and reliability

Backing up critical data in a system somewhere which is not part of the migration so that data will be secure throughout the migration phase and if something doesn’t go the planned way, you can use that backed data to prevent any sort of data loss.

While moving to cloud ensure 2 copied are available, one on-premises ( for quick revert) and one on cloud to avoid the delay in transmit of important files got missed during the migration (Using Robocopy or Carbonite). Cloud copy should be kept immune for a specific period to avoid accidental deletion. Ensure you have a solution to backup cloud machines, native solutions aren't much helpful in all scenarios. Having cloud backup infra readiness is a pre check before migration

You must also validate that the data can be migrated to the cloud, there are some types of industries in some countries that force you that the data cannot be outside the country and even outside the organization that is the custodian of that information.

Microsoft provides encryption to protect Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure Data Lake , it's supports various encryption models, including server-side encryption that uses service-managed keys, customer-managed keys in Key Vault, or customer-managed keys on customer-controlled hardware. With client-side encryption, you can manage and store keys on-premises or in another secure location.

Also, check if this involves database conversion. In such cases, there would be changes to the data type and you may need to resolve Type casting issue.

If you want to be sure that the CSP cannot see your data, try to keep the encryption key outside the CSP's cloud. You can use a third party to store it or even have it on your premises.

Before any significant data migration, back up all information. Ensure you have a complete copy of the data you plan to move to the cloud. Verify the backup's accuracy and perform periodic restoration tests to ensure data integrity. Encryption Before Transfer Encrypt data before it leaves the local environment to ensure it cannot be read if intercepted. Encryption During Transit Use secure protocols like TLS to keep data encrypted during transit, protecting against interception. Encryption at Rest Ensure data remains encrypted when stored in the cloud using strong encryption standards.

My Favourite part 😊. Seeing those metrics is such a joy especially when beautified by graphs. As a Zabbix/new Reliable/Splunk engineer, monitoring is not about performance and analysis for business decisions alone. It's also for alerting engineers, managers. Engineers should be smart is spotting difference between previous architecture and current architecture to ascertain that there is improvement in the migration and be able to print a report of what changes/improve. Monitoring should be done securely for data integrity and reliability.

Once our sensitive data is in the cloud, continuous monitoring helps us in keeping a close watch on it. This helps us quickly spot any problems that could affect our data's security or accessibility. By staying vigilant, we can protect our data and maintain its integrity throughout its time in the cloud

Technically, you can do this quickly with hash validation. There are cases where that is not possible, and for those cases, you take random samples and validate with the end user that it is the same as it was in your other environment.

There are tradeoffs that need to be carefully considered before initiating an encryption event. Failing to thoroughly review and understand these tradeoffs during your planning could be risky at best and disastrous at worst.
