Churning through a never-ending list of content marketing to-do's is a leading cause of burnout for many content marketing teams. The solution? Crafting a content strategy that the entire organization supports. While it may seem like a time investment you can't afford in the face of an editorial calendar full of content requests, a documented content strategy is the best tool I know of to beat burnout. Why? Because it becomes an objective way to prioritize your workload and even say "Not today!" to those random acts of content we all get asked to to do. In your content strategy, you'll use SMART goals to set specific measures of success every piece of content you create will support. Content that doesn't map to a SMART goal gets paused.

One of the best ways to do this is by setting quarterly goals and then resetting them. It allows the chance to review what’s happened and based on the trends and other impacts, create reasonable but aggressive goals for the next three months.

Let's take a practical example. If you're planning to improve your website's visibility, there are multiple avenues to go about it. However, once you dive deeper, there are multiple threads. Hypothetically, you'll need to juggle between existing Domain Authority, Quality of Backlinks, work required on the CMS + on-page/off-page/technical SEO. Realistically, this isn't an overnight work. Divide the tasks into specific sub-tasks, time-bound activities, total required effort per tasks, and turnaround time required to act on results. You'll find that there will be multiple short/medium/long term goals with their own set of KPIs.
Prioritization is key in managing your workload and preventing burnout. Identify your most critical tasks and allocate your energy accordingly. Tools like the Eisenhower Matrix can help you categorize tasks based on their urgency and importance. This way, you can focus on what truly matters without spreading yourself too thin across less important tasks. Remember, not everything needs to be done immediately, and some tasks can be delegated or postponed.
